Advanced Placement (AP) Courses:
The AP curriculum, administered by The College Board, consists of standardized high school courses that are roughly equivalent to undergraduate college courses. After completing an AP class, students will take the AP exam in that subject, which can earn them credits and accelerated placement in college. Since AP courses give you the opportunity to get your hands on real college-level work while still in high school, you'll get a great idea of what to expect when you move onto the next phase of your educational journey. The increased rigors of AP courses will not only give your mind a workout, they will help you polish up your time management and study skills, which, given the pressures of undergraduate life, will become an invaluable ally.
Why Take an AP Course?
Be challenged. Advanced Placement classes are rigorous and demanding, offering an intellectual stimulation that students won’t get in regular high school courses.
Improve college admissions chances. AP classes will raise the “wow” factor of a student’s high school record. If a student does well in an AP class, it’s a signal to admissions counselors that he or she is ready for the pressures of college study.
Arrive at college better prepared. AP classes sharpen students’ writing skills, teach them how to think critically, and improve their problem-solving abilities. AP students learn to navigate the academic expectations they’ll encounter in college courses.
Earn college credit. AP exams are scored on a scale of 1 (lowest) through 5 (highest). If a student earns a 3 or higher, he or she can receive course credits, advanced placement, or both upon arriving at college. AP policies vary from school to school, but the majority of colleges in the U.S. (as well as colleges and universities in 40 other countries) grant credit and/or accelerated placement for AP exams.
How Much Does it Cost?
AP courses are free, but the required AP exam cost is $98* each. Exam fee reductions are available for students and families that meet guidelines. The AP Exams are administered nationally on the first 2 weeks of May. For more information https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/ap-exams-overview
Summer Requirements:
Each AP course at LHS may have individual summer requirements. See each individual teacher’s syllabus and summer requirements.
AP Course Load and Withdraw Policy:
It is recommended that students do not take more than 3 AP courses per year. Students who select an AP course and choose to drop the course after June 1st will receive a WITHDRAW FAIL (WF) in the course for the year, and will be placed in an available course to fulfill graduation requirements. So be sure you wish to participate in the AP program at LHS. There are great benefits, but increased responsibilities. Exceptions may be made to this rule with administrative approval and extenuating circumstances.
