2025 Summer Creative Writing Camp
During the second week of June, LHSD staff and students came together to learn from local writers and leaders in the field. They were nothing short of inspiring as they brainstormed, wrote, and shared their writing together. Jane Ann Devol Fuller, Deni Naffziger, and Dani Huang joined us to lead empowering workshops in various workshop sessions alongside the district's own Cathy Lee and Karen Bergreen, who led a Yoga/movement session, Summer Blanchard, who led a foodwriting exercise, and Haley DeVore, who shared about her writing life as an educator.
Below, you will find a poem written by Cathy Lee to capture what the week was like, as well as some photos for you to check out. If you recognize a student or staff member, give them a call and ask to hear what they're working on these days, or ask to hear the piece they shared at the reading!
Shared Space
written by Cathy Lee
Pens glided across lined pages
As cars whirred and trucks rumbled by
And the old worn tops of buildings
Peered through these windowsills.
We bent and stretched our bodies on yoga mats,
And stretched our minds and leaned into new ideas,
Over our writing notebooks and in collaboration.
Shoulders relaxed as the lullaby of Frog Hollow
Wove its way around the room
With stories of Penny the Cat and Brown Nut Hare.
Musicians played with ways to join words and songs
through the notes of the trumpet, guitar,
Ukelele and harmonica.
And a fictional undercover spy visited the hallways
Of Logan High School as
A collaborative story unfolded on these walls.
We crowded over huge pieces of paper,
Markers in hand,
Words tumbling forth to describe
What kinds of things
Adventure could be.
Imagine.
Imagine a space
Where a community of creative minds
Shared the gift of unrushed time,
To write, to think, to share, to be.
To laugh, to sing, to play, to become a “we.”
