Current Events

The world comes to our doorstep through the news daily. Whether we see it on the news, read it on the internet or hear it on the radio, our students are faced with news items daily. I believe that it is important that our children learn about God’s world and see how God is at work in the world.

Reporting on current events is also a great way to read for information, practice finding main ideas, and summarize information.

During the year, every student will be required to select a current event report to the class. The article must be appropriate for school, so articles focused on violence won’t be accepted (while these are current events, there are other choices for this assignment. Examples such as natural disasters (earthquakes, tornadoes, etc)can be used, but the focus should be on the event and the impact on people.

Summary: North Alberta black bear sightings are common. It’s not always out of the ordinary to even see them in your yard! But for the Reddy family the location of the bear was a bit different. It was 8:00 pm on a normal day and a Dad was sitting outside with two of his sons. They spotted a bear wander into their garage and when it left they assumed it had run off back into the woods. But, NO! The Reddy’s heard some scratching, went inside and found that the bear was currency wandering around their house!!! Turns out the bear had tossed aside the window screen covering and hopped into a bedroom! The family’s dilemma was how to get it out! In the end the family, joined by their neighbors, piled furniture and closed doors to direct the bear to the open window. When it jumped outside, it still didn’t leave the neighborhood! I guess the bear wanted company. What would you have done if that were you?

Why did you choose this article? Black bears interest me, and I think it’s fun how this black bear was interested in us and our habitats!

What can we as Christians learn from this article? God made all creatures amazing and with their own minds. This bear chose the wrong place with his mind. With our minds we should choose the right place, God’s word.

And, that’s the end of the story Bear in the Bedroom.

This article is a world wide story that takes place in Barcelona, Spain.

I found this article on https://newsforkids.net/articles/2021/10/28/barcelona-kids-are-taking-the-bike-bus-to-school/

In Spain 5 children found a new way to get to school they called it the bike bus. The children would bike to school every Friday with their parents. The bike bus started with just 5 children but soon increased to 150 or more. The original bike bus leaves at around 8:25 every Friday morning. The path the bike bus takes is posted beforehand so people know when to join in. It starts with a small number of students and parents and more join as the bus moves along. The children ride together and they love it and say it feels like the bike bus is a party. They ride the bike bus because it is a fun way to get to school on a Friday morning. The streets are normally quite busy so police are directing traffic most of the time. The parents are hoping that this will bring people to realize we need bigger, more kid-friendly bike lanes. Already some other areas in Barcelona are organizing bike buses. One organizer said that around 1,000 people close by take part in the bike bus.

I chose this article because it looked quite interesting and because I think it is a great story about friendship.

We can learn as christians that sometimes we can’t do things on our own, so we need God’s or someone else’s help.

I got this story from CTV News.

This story is national.

Every year a cleaning group called Cintas®️ hosts Canada's Best Restroom®️ contest. It is a challenge to prove that you have the coolest bathroom in Canada. If people see an awesome washroom they can submit it to bestrestroom.com/canada. But what’s even stranger is that this year’s winner was a washroom in a Shell gas station in Edmonton, Alberta! Many of the hundreds of other nominations were in fancy restaurants and community centers. It features a smooth wooden walls, tiled floors, geometric chandeliers, and modern yet rustic mirrors to match. It also has fancy wooden stall doors and artwork.

I chose this article because I thought it was ironic that this washroom was really nice when gas station washrooms are almost always bad quality.

There was a cell phone ban in Ontario starting on Monday for all Ontario schools, but students can still use their cell phones for health and educational purposes or special needs. The government made this ban to keep the students focused in class. I think it is a good idea because then students will learn more, and not play games on there cell phones. I chose this article because I’m interested in cellphones. The source is CBC.ca.
