Technology has always been a part of human education. From the overhead projector to the interactive smartboard, technology has always played an important role in everyday education. With the evolution of technology, educational capabilities are growing and changing every day (Purdue Online, n.d). This in turn puts a whole new responsibility on educators to keep up with these advances and find ways to change along with them.
In an effort to assist the La Grange Independent School District with identifying, understanding, and prioritizing their unique technology needs with the goal of improving staff and student performance, a “Technology Needs Assessment Survey” was developed and distributed. Data collected from the survey will inform the design of a new technology plan for the district. La Grange ISD was selected for the project based on the accessibility of staff members and faculty during the Fall 2021 semester, as well as the lack of an existing technology plan.
La Grange Independent School District is an ethnically diverse, rural, Title 1 school district in the central Texas city of La Grange. The district includes La Grange Elementary School, La Grange Middle School, and La Grange High School. This Needs Assessment Survey will address the needs of approximately 143 classroom teachers and 90 other staff members including: instructional aides, guidance counselors, librarians, district administrators, school administrators, and other support staff. Classroom and office staff, as well as support staff exhibit varying degrees of technology proficiency. La Grange ISD classroom teachers and other staff members range from 22 to 65 years of age, are both male and female, and have a combined average of 10.5 years of experience.
This Needs Assessment Survey is being administered in order to assist school-level decision makers in the La Grange ISD school district —administrators, technology directors, or school board members— in the collection of data used to plan and improve uses of technology in teaching, collaborating, and learning activities. Its purpose is to serve as a guide for choosing technology resources, devices, support and training needed in the district.
