Westminster Abbey

LGfL was given exclusive access to film new material at Westminster Abbey for a school audience to help young children understand the significance of the Abbey over hundreds of years in relation to coronations and also where and what will happen at the coronation of Kings Charles III in 2023.

The Coronation Theatre

There have been 38 coronations that have taken place in this part of the Abbey called the Coronation Theatre.

It is here that their majesties the King and the Queen Consort will be crowned in Westminster Abbey.

The Cosmati Pavement

The Cosmati Pavement was created by Italian and English craftsmen in 1268 during the reign of Henry III. This is where the Coronation Chair, the 700-year --old has been placed.

The Coronation Regalia

Regalia describes the crowns and crown jewels, all the key items used as part of the Coronation Ceremony.

The Coronation Chair

The Coronation Chair dates back to 1296, but it was first used in the Coronation in 1308 for Edward II. It was last used in 1953 for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, when it was located up by the high altar on the Cosmati Pavement for the Coronation Ceremony on that day.
