Meet the Teacher

Mrs. Cervantes, Ellianna (daughter), Jose (husband)

Mrs. Cervantes in the Navy

Introduction:

Growing up, I did not realize my passion for teaching. In fact, it was quite the opposite. I didn’t like school at all. I struggled with understanding key concepts. Most importantly, I did not understand the habits of a good student. However, my parents sought out the best Charter school they could find and remained actively involved in my education. They found a school which had teachers that maintained high expectations of me and refused to let me fail. They continued to support me and teach me the habits of a good student. My teachers and parents never gave up on me. Instead, they taught me how to do hard things. Through many long nights of studying, tutoring, and a growth mind set I was able to graduate from high school at 17 with an Associates of Arts degree. I still had not realized my passion for teaching. It didn’t yet occur to me how much my teachers and parents affected my ability to succeed in school and in life.

After graduation, I followed the footsteps of my father and grandfathers by enlisting in the military. As a gunner’s mate in the Navy, I was the only female in a division of 15 men! I had so many life changing adventures. Through these adventures I learned how to do hard things, the value of work ethic, and a growth mindset. I met my husband while stationed in Japan and I finished my Navy contract. Shortly after, I had my daughter Ellianna.

As a new mom, I was scared. I wanted to do everything right. I wanted to nurture my daughter's brain, body, and soul the best I could. I started researching child development. I poured through every parenting book and child development book I could find. Finally, it clicked! I loved learning about helping kids learn. I realized the impact of education on young kids’ lives. I realized the hours my parents and teachers spent ensuring I could succeed impacted the adult I had become. I wanted to be a part of that, not only for my child, but every child that crossed my path.

Finally, I had discovered an occupation that I had passion for and brought joy to my life. I received my bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and credential from National University. Since then, I have taught in kindergarten, 6th grade, and second grade. This will be my second year teaching at LFCS. I have found so much joy in teaching at our amazing school. I am looking forward to building relationships with each one of my students this year. My goal is that all students find joy in learning and find that they can also do hard things by learning the habits of a good student and maintaining a growth mindset.
