To provide an on-site hiring event for graduating high school students who wish to begin their career full-time after graduation in early June.

High School to Hired: Crossing the Stage to Earning a Wage is an on-site hiring event designed to provide employers with the opportunity to hire talented individuals as they graduate high school and wish to begin a full-time career.  Participating students have been identified by school counselors and career specialists prior to this event as being career ready with a base line of employability skills and credentials to enter the workforce and possess the desire to begin a full-time career after graduation. Following April 25, educators will work with students to determine next steps to employment such as drug screening, second interviews, site visits, resolve challenges with transportation, ensure they meet uniform and tool requirements, etc.  

 

HS to Hired: Classroom to Career on March 1, 2024

Leading up to the High School to Hired event in April, MEBA will offer participating students a day of professional development at High School to Hired: Classroom to Career on March 1, 2024.  The purpose of this event is to prepare students for High School to Hired: Crossing the Stage to Earning a Wage (an on-site hiring event for graduating high school seniors scheduled for April 25, 2025).  During this summit, students will take part in career prep activities and hear from industry experts on topics such as resume writing, interviewing skills, dressing for success, using soft skills, employer expectations, employer on-boarding processes, etc.  The goal is to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and resources beneficial to launching a career. This student summit will take place at Midlands Technical College, NE Campus (details in registration confirmation email). 

 

High School to Hired is a collaboration of education leaders, community and industry partners with a focus on making the transition from school to work a successful one.

There are many career programs and opportunities for students, parents and educators in the Midlands.  Listed below are opportunities and resources offered by MEBA business, community and education partners.  

 

South Carolina State Fair Scholarship Information

 Since 1997 the South Carolina State Fair has awarded scholarships to students across the state of South Carolina.  Their 2024 scholarship application and eligibility requirements are available beginning today (February 1st) on our website at www.scstatefair.org.  The students will have until March 15th to submit their applications onlinePlease make your students are aware that this scholarship is available to any student in South Carolina who is a senior in a public or private high school or home school.  This student must be planning to attend a public or private college, university, or technical college in the state of South Carolina.

 

The South Carolina State Fair will award fifty (53) $10,000 scholarships to students across the state to be paid at the rate of $2500 per year over a four-year period.  The fifty-three 2024 scholars will be required to meet eligibility requirements deemed necessary by the South Carolina State Fair.  The South Carolina state Fair is dedicated to educating South Carolina’s young adults and we appreciate your effort in making your students aware of this opportunity.  Click this link, Link to Ride of Your Life Scholarship video on YouTube, to view our scholarship video.


Carolina Children's Home 

Carolina Children’s Home is accepting applications for scholarships for 2024.  The guidelines and application form can be found on their website, carolinachildrenshome.com. The deadline is February 28, 2024.   We would encourage all eligible students to apply.  These scholarships are for $5,000.


Create Opportunity 

Create Opportunity is now accepting applications through April 1, 2024 for their next, 6-month training program for software engineers.  This program is a no-cost training program for individuals age 18 and above.  To learn more about the application process, requirements, training format, $4,000 participant stipend, employer placement and more, please see the attached flyer.

South Carolina Rural Water Association 

SCRWA has developed a pre-apprenticeship opportunity for high school students.   This opportunity is set up so students can work up to 10 hours weekly and begin online learning modules to work towards water treatment certifications, all while attending high school.  If you have students interested in this opportunity, please have them register using the link below.  The coalition has also developed a "Pre-apprenticeship Link Tree" where you can access the online pre-apprenticeship application form and related information, website for SC Rural Water Association, Apprenticeship H2O, and other resources.

Apprenticeship Carolina 

 Has launched Apprenticeship Explorer, a dynamic tool that connects apprentices and employers across South Carolina.  Apprenticeship Explorer can be used by a student looking for a current apprenticeship that matches their interests or hoping to connect with employers so they can learn about future opportunities, it is easily accessible and simplifies the application process. Columbia Police Department, Explorer Program for Students

 The CPD's Explorer Program is dedicated to the success, training, and overall aptitude of the youth within its ranks.
