The text structure of cause and effect affects the meaning of the book, We Beat the Street because it shows the reader the results of what could happen with their action.
The cause of the book states, “ ‘We ain’t got no money, man,’ Noody reminded them. ‘I got an idea,’ Sampson said. ‘Will, you be the lookout, and make sure the way is clear. Me and Noody will go in, get the Icees, and put them in our shorts. It’ll be easy!” Since the boys were often without money”(Draper, 31). That is to say that the cause of this situation was that the boys had no money and they were thirsty for drinks. Because of them having no money, they went to steal it from Jack’s. This is important to the book “We Beat the Street” because it briefly shows how cause and effect impacts the book. Because they had no money they were going to steal showing that they are willing to be at risk of getting in trouble.
The result of the text states,“Jack, screaming and cursing at them in both English and Spanish, dragged Sampson and Noody from the front door, where escape had been only seconds away, to the back of the store. The Icee fell out of Sampson’s clothes onto the wooden floor of Jack’s store” (Draper, Pg. 33). Basically this is saying that Jack is really angry at Sampson and Noody for trying to steal Icee. Jack is expressing his frustration to the boys and trying to teach a lesson to never steal again. This is important because the effect of the situation of stealing has affected them. Because they got caught by the owner Jack, and he was really angry, so angry that scared Sampson. It also shows how Jack is going to punish the boys for trying to steal. This shows how the effect of the situation affects the book.
In the book the cause conveys that, “Several of the Arlington Street boys yelled at them from cars driven by older kids, perhaps their older brother. Rameck and his boys shouted back. Finally Rameck said, “You think you so bad, why don’t you get outta them car and do something” (Draper Pg. 68-69)! In the book it shows that the Arlington boys are causing trouble. Rameck and his friends try to be rude to them. Rameck tells them to get out of the car and do something to actually be bad. The author utilizes the cause of the circumstance and shows the cause of the story. The cause being, Rameck telling them that they should get out the car and do something to be bad. This could cause them to get angry and use that anger to get someone hurt. The aftermath of the cause in the book states, “The Arlington Street kids, about ten of them, jumped out of their cars and proceeded to punch and roll with Rameck and the Plainfield boys. Everybody squared off with one person, and the brawl began”(Draper Pg. 69). In the text, it shows the aftermath of the cause briefly. The Arlington boys did get mad and wanted to hurt Rameck and his friends. A fight was about to happen between Rameck and his friends to the Arlington boys because of the cause, Rameck saying something rude to the Arlington boys. This is important because the circumstance of the cause was caused by Rameck. He caused the effect because he said something impolite to the Arlington boys. Which causes Rameck and his friends to fight with the Arlington boys.
The cause in the book “We Beat the Street” was when Rameck said, “Rameck and his friends were out of control. Rameck lifted the man up, not to help him, but so he’d be a better target. They hit him again. And again. For fifteen or twenty minutes they beat the man until he could barely move.”(Draper Pg. 103). This quote shows that Rameck and his friends were out of control, which led them to lift up the man to hurt him. Rameck and his friends kept hitting the man for at least 15 minutes leading him to barely move. This is important to the book because the cause is when Rameck and his friends were attacking the man. This could cause Rameck and his friends to get in huge trouble because if the man was severely hurt then they could be in huge trouble. The effect of this book states, “The crack addict, who was being wheeled into an ambulance by now, looked up and identified Rameck, Train, and the others as the ones who had assaulted him. Rameck and his friends were tossed into the back of the car and taken down to the station”(Draper, pg. 104-105 ). In other words, this is saying that the man was brought by the ambulance. Rameck and his friends had to go to the back of the police car to roughly assault the man. It leads Rameck and his friends to the police station for investigation due to their rough assault on the man. This impacts the story because it shows the text structure cause and effect. When Rameck and his friends attacked the man they got in trouble for it and now their lives.
In summary, cause and effect impacts the meaning of the book. We Beat the Street because it shows the reader what would happen after they do the cause and how it could change their lives. This is proven by 3 situations of George stealing drinks, Rameck saying something rude causing a fight with the Arlington boys, and Rameck attacking a man causing the police to investigate. All of these causes and effects impact the book and affect George and Rameck making them learn their lesson in the past.
Dutch Fork Middle School, also known as DFMS, is a STEAM school that focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.
DFMS is more than just a school—it gives opportunities to students that other schools might not. They give students the opportunity to learn no matter their learning style (a common theme within the Lexington Richland 5 school district). The teachers within DFMS realize that teaching isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. They give the extra “spark” that students might need to go the extra mile. They also provide a strong support system, from counselors to teachers.
The environment within DFMS is extraordinary, from the laughter in the hallways to the student-teacher relationships to the quiet work environment provided for tests. Teachers give students multiple ways to learn and offer words of encouragement. Students can choose from a variety of programs and extracurricular activities, including basketball, softball, robotics, choir, band, mock trial, and many others. These are here as places for students to express themselves freely.
Dutch Fork isn’t just a school that prepares students for the next grade; it also attempts to prepare students for life, from financial literacy classes to multimedia basics classes.
The way DFMS makes students feel is not just an experience—it’s a lasting memory shared by both students and staff.
