Launching a Literary Life

Routines and procedures will be established and modeled with read-aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading as we set up our reading and writing workshop in the classroom. Groundwork will also be established for close reading and authentic (dialogic) conversations among readers as they engage in reading their first texts of the year. In the writing workshop. Students will learn how to author their writing lives by becoming a classroom community of writers. Students will generate seed ideas and draft short pieces to start the year and build stamina around writing.

What is a workshop model classroom?

A workshop-type classroom revolves around students being taught reading and writing strategies and then time to implement those strategies. It begins with a teacher-led mini-lesson of reading or writing strategies then guided practice of those strategies with independent work as assessment of taught strategy.
