Region Orchestra

Region Orchestra is wonderful opportunity for students in middle and high school to perform with the finest student musicians in the midlands of South Carolina and to perform under the direction of a nationally/internationally renowned conductor. Colleges look for student accomplishments such as acceptance in to these prestigious orchestras, and these events also give students a chance to meet and make new friends around the region/state with similar interests. The Midlands Region Orchestra is a two-day orchestra event for the strongest string players in Richland, Lexington, and Aiken counties. Students who participate in the Region Orchestra may audition for the South Carolina All-State Orchestra, drawing from the most talented players in the entire state.

Student Audition Procedures

*Students need to request the audition materials from their sponsoring orchestra teacher. Due to copyright law, audition material will not be accessible from the SCMEA website*

Students are receiving two scales (1 Major & 1 Minor), audition excerpts, and one entire piece from the Region repertoire. Students will perform one of the two scales, several of the selected excerpts, and be prepared to play one or two excerpts from the piece given in entirety. Students are being adjudicated on the following criteria: tone, rhythm/tempo, intonation, musicality, and security.

 Auditions are Saturday, October 4, 2025 at Pelion Middle School.

(In the event of inclement weather, auditions will be held Saturday, October 11, 2025 at Pelion Middle School)

SCMEA Region Audition cost: $10 ($5 additional fee for late registrants).

Audition Times are assigned very close to the audition date. Specific requests are available. If you have another important event on the date of the audition (wedding, SAT, family event, etc.), you must communicate that with me at least 2 weeks before the audition date so I can relay that information on to the region audition chair person. Otherwise, the organizers assume your entire day is completely free and you can audition at any time.
