Injury Prevention Floors
The dance floor is a sprung floor. The materials used to make this type of floor transfer energy from the body to a subfloor that deflects and safely returns energy (spring). This type of floor protects the body from stress fractures, excessive fatigue, and joint stress.
Adjustable Barres
Barres are important for providing stability and balance while students are learning correct body placement. Barres are used for stretching, warming up muscles, strengthening muscles, and for movement combinations at varied speeds that work on executing dance steps properly. Each barre exercise assists in strengthening feet, increasing extension, improving flexibility, balancing, and helping a dancer discover how to be light on their feet in jumps.
Mirrors
It is beneficial to have mirrors in a dance room so that students can see their body alignment. In the learning process it is important to know how movement looks as well as how movement feels in the body. The mirrors can help students critique their own technical alignment.
Dressing Rooms and Storage Areas
The dance room has 2 dressing areas. Inside the dancing space, there are cubbies for dancers to place their water and shoes during class. Personal belongings of great value can be locked away in the office upon request.
Sound System
The system in the dance room fills the room with sound where the dancers can feel the music and be inspired through the intricate rhythms with each song.
Smart Board, iPad, and Other Devices
The academic side of dance is valued as highly as the performance side at Irmo Middle School. Therefore, the dance room has a SMART board to assist in interactive lessons about dance vocabulary, history, and important people. iPads, Chromebooks, and other devices are used as aids to bring the outside world of dance into the classroom to give dancers a genuine and relevant experience.
