In this course, students craft short fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction while drawing inspiration from their own experiences, writing prompts, and mentor texts. For each summative writing assignment, students participate in a Writer’s Workshop with their classmates and conference one-on-one with their teacher (Note: Students schedule their conference, and these take place outside of the regular class meeting time). Readings will include independent selections, short pieces, and excerpts by mostly contemporary writers. By the end of this course, students will produce a substantial body of original work.
