What is the PSAT?

What is the PSAT?

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test administered by the College Board and cosponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) in the United States.  Online information is available at the PSAT/NMSQT or National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) websites.   Only 11th graders (juniors) are eligible, the test is simply for practice only for sophomore students.

Why take the PSAT?

The PSAT is an optional test.  However, the PSAT/NMSQT is great practice for taking the SAT.  The score you earn on your Junior year exam may qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship and others.

Another advantage of taking the PSAT/NMSQT is the option of getting a free, tailored practice program for the SAT through Khan Academy, based on your personal test result. You will also have free access to the “Roadmap to Careers” online tool from Roadtrip Nation to explore majors and careers that reflect your interests.

We recommend having a conversation with your student about what is the right decision for them.
