Unit Two: CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS LEARNING TARGETS

LT 01. I can identify the six life processes

LT 02. I can name and describe the two types of reproduction

LT 03. I can name and describe the two types of stimuli

LT 04. I can list the characteristics that all living things HAVE

LT 05. I can list all the needs of what living things NEED to survive

LT 06. I can determine if an object is living or nonliving by analyzing its characteristics.

Unit Three: Microscope/Cells Learning Targets

MS 01. I can identify the different parts of a compound microscope, and give the function of each.

MS 02. I can determine the total magnification of an object I am viewing under a compound light microscope and accurately draw the object to scale based on my field of view.

MS 03. I can use a compound light microscope to observe and draw objects at different magnifications.

CS 01. I can provide evidence that all organisms (unicellular and multicellular) are made of cells

CS 02. I can identify the structure of cellular organelles

CS 03. I can explain the function of cellular organelles

CS 04. I can compare and contrast plant and animal cells

Unit Four: Cell Transport Learning Targets

CT 01. I can build a model of a cell membrane and explain how the structure of the cell membrane allows for transport of materials into and out of the cell.

CT 02. I give examples of why diffusion and osmosis are important to living things

CT 03: I can recognize the reactants and products of cellular respiration and photosynthesis.

CT 04. I can identify osmosis and diffusion occurring and explain the reason behind the movement of molecules.

Unit 5: Human Body

HB 01: I can recognize the levels of organization in the human body

HB 02: I can identify a muscle, ligament, tendon, and bone given a dissection of a chicken wing and explain how they work together to allow for movement

HB 03: I can identify the main function of the following systems: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, muscular, skeletal, excretory, and nervous.

HB 04: I can give examples and explanations of the body systems interacting to carry out essential life functions.

Unit 6: Genetics Learning Target

GN 01. I can describe the DNA molecule, including chromosomes, genes, nucleotides, and complementary base pairs.

GN 02. I can accurately build and label a DNA molecule and RNA molecule

GN 03 I can explain how gene expression turns the code of DNA into traits

GN 04. I can describe the causes and effects of mutations.

GN 05. I can identify the genotypes and phenotypes of organisms

GN 06 Given a genetic cross, I can set up and fill in a Punnett square.

GN 07 Given a genetic cross, I can determine the phenotypic and genotypic outcomes.

GN 08 I can explain why offspring typically have similar traits as their parents

GN 9 I can read a pedigree chart and explain how traits are passed down. I can also use a pedigree to determine the genotypes and phenotypes of various individuals.

GN 10 I can explain how sex is determined in humans by looking at a karyotype and a Punnett square

Unit 7: Evolution

EV 01. I can trace the order of appearance of different types of organisms on Earth over geologic time.

EV 02 I can use fossil evidence to infer the behavior of extinct species

EV 03 I can describe what an environment was like in the past by looking at the fossils in it today.

EV 04. I can explain how Charles Darwin’s travels/ findings helped him formulate his theory of Evolution.

EV 05. Using the steps in natural selection, I can explain how evolution works to evolve new species.

EV 06. I can name and explain the 5 pieces of evidence that supports the theory of Evolution, and I can identify each piece of evidence as an example of Change Over Time or Common Descent

EV 07. Given a specific organism, I can provide evidence that this organism has changed over time and provide valid hypotheses as to the reasons for these changes.

Unit 8: Ecology (PBL)

EC 01: I can construct a food web and identify the producers, consumers, and decomposers in a food web.

EC 02: I can explain how energy passes through a food web and explain how an addition or subtraction of an organism affects other organisms in the food web.

EC 03: I can give examples of limiting factors and explain how they affect populations and carrying capacity.

EC 04. I can analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for the effects of periods of abundant and scarce resources on the growth of organisms and the size of populations in an ecosystem.

EC 05: I can name, define, and give an example of the three types of symbiosis.

EC 06: I can explain how human activities have impacted the environment
