Why mentoring?
At Fiske School we welcome several newcomers each year. As part of our attempt to make these children feel welcome and help them with adjusting to a new culture, we have created a mentoring program. Before matches are made, we make sure to contact families to inquire if they want their child in the mentoring program. Once permission slips are signed, the mentoring begins!
What does it look like?
When a student is identified by staff as qualifying for a mentor, we match them with a volunteer on staff. The pair meets weekly to get to know one another, read books, play games, and have fun. Three times per year we invite families in to socialize, meet one another, and learn about our community. Our mentors love spending time with students and working on social language. They learn a lot about new cultures and get to know students from different grade levels. The newcomers get to meet students from all over the world, and they also interact with the other mentors at the community meetings.
