What is afrofuturism? Why is Black Panther such a big deal? Follow the instructions below to examine Black Panther in the context of afrofuturism, and use speculative imagery to empower marginalized identities!
First, watch the trailer for Black Panther
Discuss: How does the imagery in the trailer differ from other superhero or sci fi movies you’ve seen? What do you notice about set design and costume?
Reflect: Define afrofuturism. What is it about the design of Black Panther that places it in this genre? Why does that matter? What is powerful about afrofuturism?
Apply: Consider an aspect of your identity that is underrepresented or misrepresented in the media. Design a superhero that celebrates that identity. Draw and name your superhero. Bonus: diagram your superhero’s supersuit! (e.g. T’Challa’s panther suit has a triangular pattern inspired by the Okavango Delta in Botswana).
