When Will Parents Receive Praise Communication

At WKMS, we have Student Leadership Referrals. If a child shows outstanding leadership or contributes positively during the class period in some way, I will give the student a Student Leadership Referral. This referral can be cashed in on Fridays for free ice cream in the cafeteria. My hope is, they'll tell you about receiving the Student Leadership Referral, but I definitely will want to make sure you know. So, I'll be contacting you and sharing how proud I am of them.

When Will Parents Receive Concerned Communication

  1. There are two reasons parents will hear from me about concerns I have. One way will be if there is a discipline concern. The other way will be if I have any academic concerns. If I have a concern that fits either category, I will notify you immediately. Failure is not an option in this class whether it be a failure to comply, discipline wise, or failure to complete an assignment adequately (80% or below on any assignment formative or summative). Below are the progression of consequences, and an illustration of the reflection sheet referred to in the list of consequences. If you have any questions, please let me know.

  2. Fill out a student reflection form. If the student does not return the reflection form back signed (this is for face to face instruction only after the New Year if we return) OR during class continues to remain undisciplined, we will move into step 3 of the consequences.

  3. The student will receive lunch detention. If a student gets 4 lunch detentions in a semester we move to step 4.

  4. The student will receive an office referral. Severe disruptions can lead to the teacher jumping straight to step 4 if necessary. However, I hope it never gets to that point. In the event a disruption is significant enough to require an immediate office referral, parent contact will be made via email or telephone.

The behavior reflection will be connected back to the social contract in order for the student to share their thoughts on why they were struggling that day following procedures. In the event the student reflects in a way the teacher does not agree, the teacher will respond regarding how they saw things unfolding. This opportunity is meant for the student not only to think about ways they can improve their behavior, but provide a voice for them in the event they feel as if they were disciplined unfairly. It prevents the teacher from stopping class to get an explanation since the teacher will have already taken time with them prior to this step to ask "The Four Questions." However, if when they fill out the reflection the teacher feels there was a true misunderstanding between the student and the teacher, the teacher will discard the reflection form and make things right with the student.
