Automotive Collision Repair Technology introduces the structure of the automobile and the use of all tools necessary for body panel repairs and refinishing. First-year students, focusing on basic repair skills, accomplish actual repair jobs.

Automotive Technology teaches students to become proficient in the maintenance and repair of automobiles. Students will learn about automotive fasteners, gaskets, sealants, liquids and fluids, writing work orders, tire and wheel services, vehicle chassis lubrication, basic electrical systems, batteries, vehicle starting, charging systems, lighting systems, basic engine fundamentals, minor engine tune-ups and brake systems.

Students who complete both courses may be eligible to exempt AUT 105, AUT 106 and AUT 112 at Midlands Technical College.

Building Construction is part of the instructional program that prepares students to perform entry-level building construction tasks under the direction of a supervisor or an experienced craftsman. Primary instruction is given in basic carpentry, masonry, residential electricity and plumbing and safety practices.

To become a cosmetologist, the State Board of Cosmetology requires students to pass a theory test and a practical test of skills. Students must complete Cosmetology 1 and 2 and Cosmetology 3 and 4, and pass the exam to receive a cosmetology license from the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Board. Personal appearance care service workers participate in continuing education and training at salons, cosmetology schools and product shows. Students assist individuals with their personal appearance including shampooing, cutting, coloring and styling hair. Students learn to give manicures, pedicures, scalp treatment, facials and makeup analysis. Students clean and style wigs and hairpieces.

Students will take 1 and 2 together in one semester and then 3 and 4 together in one semester.

A rubric is utilized to determine students admitted to the Cosmetology program. Consumable supplies for this course range between $300 and $325. In addition, each Level 1 and 2 student must purchase a personal kit for approximately $400.

Culinary Arts is designed to study the food service industry. It covers all aspects of the industry, potential careers, equipment use, food preparation, food storage, ordering and work simplification. Students receive practical and theoretical experiences to obtain competence in each area.

Digital Art and Design is for students who have an interest in pursuing a career in the graphic design field. The course begins with a basic understanding of design, color theory and typography, then moves on to build electronic design skills in corporate identity, advertising, packaging and other areas.

Electricity courses begins the study of conduit bending; electrical theory; test equipment; introduction to the electrical code; safety in the workplace; residential, commercial and industrial wiring; and blueprint reading. Students work with hand tools and construct working electrical stations. Students participating in this program have the opportunity to become certified with the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), a nationally recognized certification program. Students may be eligible to participate in cooperative work experiences or apprenticeships, which combine career and technical training with supervised work experience in business and industry.

Finance is the process of raising funds or capital for any kind of expenditure. It is the process of channeling various funds in the form of credit, loans, or invested capital to those economic entities that most need them or can put them to the most productive use. There are many different courses offered that are considered Finance classes.

The course materials for both Firefighter I and II will follow International Fire Service Training Association’s Essentials of FireFighting, 6th Edition training manual. Students will learn and perform all skills required by the South Carolina Fire Academy for certification, such as; carrying and climbing 14’, 24’, & 35’ ladders, work on an elevated roof prop, search, rescue, and fire attack in hazardous conditions (fire, smoke, heat, low visibility) with appropriate protective equipment in a monitored training environment.

Fire service training for youths over the age of 16 is recognized by the fire service in the State of South Carolina as a valuable means for recruiting and retaining future volunteer and career firefighters.

Requirements for participation in the program: (1) 16 years of age at the start of the program; (2) a signed waiver by a parent or guardian understanding the course requirements and hazards associated; (3) a signed medical clearance by a physician (sports physical); (4) registration with the local junior explorer program. All forms will be sent home with the student during the first week of class.

Health Science 1 is the first of four rigorous courses offered to students interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field. During this course, students are introduced to healthcare history, careers, law and ethics, cultural diversity, medical terminology and medical math, infection control, professionalism, communication, the basics of healthcare facilities and types of healthcare insurance. Students gain information on where health care has been, where it is going, and how professionalism and personal characteristics impact their success. The curriculum includes potential First Aid Certification. The skills and knowledge the students learn in Health Science 1 serve to prepare them to advance in all Health Science experiences.

Law Enforcement Services is designed to provide the student with a foundational knowledge of the law enforcement system with specific emphasis placed on policing and modern police practices and techniques Upon completion of this course the student will be able to define and demonstrate the application of key terms and techniques used in the law enforcement field.

Machine Technology provides classroom instruction and lab experiences related to metalworking. It focuses on the operation of equipment such as the lathe, milling machine, grinders, drilling machines, precision measuring instruments and hand tools. Blueprint reading and math are important parts of the course. Students who register for this course should enjoy working with machines and making metal projects.

Power Equipment Technology introduces students to small gasoline engines regardless of the level of knowledge on the subject. Practical application in the lab provides instruction on two and four stroke theory and repair under the supervision of an experienced mechanic. General safety and the proper use of tools and equipment associated with small gasoline engine repair are covered to keep students safe while working in the lab environment. Students receive training on small internal combustion engines used on portable equipment such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, rotary tillers, motorcycles, pumps and compressors. The training includes locating and solving problems, using specialized test equipment, overhauling the basic engine, and repairing or replacing engine systems.

Introduction to Teaching Level 1 is designed to prepare students for employment and/or postsecondary opportunities in the education field. The program provides instruction in the teaching profession, communication skills, human growth and development, planning and instructional strategies, and school-societal relationships. Technology is integrated throughout the course work.

Introduction to Teaching Level 2 is an advanced level course that builds on skills developed in Introduction to Teaching Level 1. Students develop a higher level of proficiency through authentic learning experiences. Students plan engaging lessons, enhance communication and presentation skills, explore school-societal relationships, and exhibit professionalism. Technology is integrated throughout the course work.

Welding focuses on the physical properties of metals as well as the testing of welded joints. Students learn oxy fuel and plasma cutting. They also study welding techniques (shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, gas tungsten arc and flux core arc). Students study safety issues, read blueprints and design projects.
