MacBook shortcuts help students complete everyday tasks more quickly and efficiently. For students in grades 9–12, learning shortcuts can save time, improve productivity, and make navigating their MacBook easier.
Most day-to-day actions rely on holding the Command (⌘) key:
⌘ + C: Copy selected text or item.
⌘ + V: Paste copied text or item.
⌘ + Z: Undo the last action.
⌘ + A: Select all items or text on the page.
⌘ + F: Find/Search for specific words on a page or document.
⌘ + Spacebar: Open Spotlight Search to instantly find files or apps.
The top row of your keyboard gives you quick control over your device settings:
F1 / F2: Decrease or increase screen brightness.
F3: Open Mission Control to view all open windows.
F4: Launch Spotlight search.
F5 / F6: Dictation (press) or Siri (hold) / Toggle Do Not Disturb.
F7 / F8 / F9: Media controls (Rewind, Play/Pause, Fast Forward).
F10 / F11 / F12: Mute / Decrease or Increase volume.
Globe Key (🌐): Switch keyboard languages or open the emoji picker.
Quickly organize and move between your applications:
⌘ + Tab: Switch between open applications.
⌘ + W: Close the active window or tab.
⌘ + Q: Quit an app completely.
Red Button (Top Left): Close the current app window.
Yellow Button (Middle): Minimize the app window to the Dock.
Green Button (Top Left): Enter or exit Full-Screen mode.
Master touch controls for effortless navigation:
Two-Finger Scroll: Move two fingers up or down to scroll web pages or documents.
Two-Finger Secondary Click: Tap with two fingers to right-click (opens context menus). Two-Finger Pinch: Pinch inward or outward to zoom in or out.
Three-Finger Swipe: Swipe up with three fingers to open Mission Control.
Optimize your online learning and research experience:
⌘ + T: Open a new browser tab.
⌘ + Shift + T: Reopen the last closed tab.
Bookmark a Site: Select the Star icon on the right side of the URL bar to save a page.
Create Desktop Shortcut: Drag a website URL directly from the address bar onto your desktop for instant access.
Tailor your MacBook controls to match your needs:
System Settings: Select the Apple Icon in the top-left menu bar -> System Settings -> Accessibility to enable screen reading, zoom, or motor supports.
Connect to Wi-Fi / AirPlay: Select the Control Center icon in the top-right menu bar to quickly manage Wi-Fi networks or share your screen using AirPlay.
Restart Weekly: Keep your MacBook running smoothly by selecting the Apple Icon. Restart once per week.
