Leaphart Elementary is a Title One Engineering magnet school. STEAM concepts are interwoven into all subject areas and daily routines through following a design process of planning, designing, testing, and communicating. Our school has implemented, “ LEAP into STEAM” to allow our students to follow their passions in the STEAM areas of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. Fifth grade students select four programs for the year ahead for an hour per week, switching every quarter of the year. Many choices are available for our students that offer collaborative, hands-on learning experiences. Our music teacher leads the Trash Can Band where students learn to engineer their own drums and learn to play together. Our art teacher has designed a Tinkercad and 3D Design program, where students learn to use the 3D design tool Tinkercad to create a variety of models that are then printed out on a 3D Printer. Our Lego Robotics program is led by our Spanish teacher. Students build, program, test, and complete challenges using Lego robotics. Movie Making, taught by our Guidance Counselor, gives students a chance to learn a variety of storyboarding, interviewing, acting, videography, and editing skills. Our computer lab manager allows students to go in-depth with computer programming with CS First Coding- learning about storytelling, game creations, and music creation with computer science. We also have a Greenhouse class where students can plan and plant seasonal plants and learn about solar energy with our solar panels as well as a personal fitness program.
