Assessments
In Kindergarten, your child will take these District-mandated assessments.
Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA)
This year your child will take several assessments.
All public school students enrolled in kindergarten must take the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA) during the first forty-five days of the school year.
EVERY child attending 5 year old kindergarten is assessed using this online tool. The KRA is a developmentally appropriate instrument that measures a child’s school readiness across multiple domains.
Understanding a child’s school readiness helps kindergarten teachers best meet the child’s needs, and it helps schools, families, communities and policy makers know how best to support young children as they enter the K-12 environment.
MAP Test
The NWEA MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Test is an advanced tool designed to evaluate and promote your child’s academic growth and learning achievements. What makes this test special is its adaptive nature, ensuring a personalized testing experience that adjusts to your child’s unique learning level.
The test helps educators understand where your child’s academic strengths and weaknesses are, so they can tailor instructions to meet your child’s unique learning needs. It also helps track your child’s academic growth over time.
Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA)
On this test, your child will read a benchmark book to the teacher and then retell the story. The teacher then scores your child on a range of skills, such as accuracy of reading, comprehension, and fluency.
This system starts with level A, for the easiest books, and then switches to numeric levels, running from 1 to 80.
Kindergarten Sight Word List
Sight Words are words that are most commonly used in text that your child will come across most often while reading. These words do not always follow the conventional spelling or pronunciation rules and can cause children some difficulty during their beginning stages of reading.
Kindergarten uses the words listed above, Lists A-D. Your child may read words from List E, which is great! Those words spill-over to the first grade list.
