Second session of Ped Xing 13 talks over Political Campaigning and Rhetoric in the 21st century

SATURDAY, January 29, 2022 - The UP Political Society held their second conference of PED Xing 13, tackling Political Campaigning and Rhetoric in the 21st Century. Various student publications, including the Letran SHS Fourth Estate, participated in the Zoom conference and Facebook Livestream program.

The webinar hosts, Mr. Pio and Ms. Fionna, introduced themselves and gave some refreshments to the participants with a flashback from the first checkpoint of PED Xing 13. They also shared a short description and an example of the second checkpoint for political and rhetorical campaigning.

Mr. Pio and Ms. Fionna then introduced Mr. Gabriell Garcia for his opening remarks and Ms. Raena Aristorenas for the conference reminders. Moving on to the highlight of the webinar, the emcees welcomed the first guest speaker, Mr. Gene Segarra Navera, a Senior Lecturer. He pursued his doctorate at the National University of Singapore.

Mr. Navera greeted everyone and introduced his discourse. He stated that "rhetoric" is focused on audience-centric and genre-oriented and "effectiveness" is empowering and transformative, as he emphasized further breaking these down to particular questions. Mr. Pio and Ms. Fionna then highlighted Mr. Navera’s words throughout his talk as they asked participants what part of the talk had touched them the most.

Mr. Pio then introduced the next guest speaker, Mr. Charles Erize Ladia, an Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Diliman.

Mr. Ladia started his talk by asking participants if an influencer was among them while discussing the term "influencer." He also expounded the importance of the Filipino youth as they comprised half of the population as voters so far. Regarding further, Mr. Ladia also defined "rhetoric". He stated that it focuses more on impact, and he gave examples of the process of using it to influence. "Always expose yourself to information," stated Mr. Ladia.

Mr. Pio and Ms. Fionna again pointed out the specific talks of Mr. Ladia as they asked participants for their insights through the talks. They also opened the question and answer part of the webinar for the first two guest speakers.

Afterward, Mr. Pio and Ms. Fionna presented the certificates of appreciation given to Mr. Navera and Mr. Ladia. Nearing the end of the webinar, Mr. Pio and Ms. Fionna introduced an activity of having political talks as participants were invited to the Breakout Rooms in Zoom. Participants got to know their fellow campers and stated their views during the political talk activity.

As the last segment approached, Mr. Pio and Ms. Fionna introduced the last guest speaker, Mr. Ken Paolo Gilo, the National Chairperson for the Student Council Alliance of the Philippines.

Mr. Gilo started his talk based on his experiences validated by the political communications training. He discussed further rhetoric and campaigning. He also stated that one must use rhetoric to campaign for the candidate that would benefit the youth.

Lastly, Ms. Fionna granted the certificate of appreciation to Mr. Gilo for his valuable time and expertise. The webinar successfully came to an end with reminders of future events regarding Ped Xing 13 this upcoming February 5, 2022, and the completion of the evaluation forms.
