The program started with the opening remarks and introduction of the speaker led by Mr. Jerry L. Escultura Jr., the TechVoc Learning Area Coordinator. Mr. Escultura warmly welcomed the President of the Philippine Association Media And Information Literacy, which was none other than Mr. Arniel V. Ping, LPT.
Mr. Arniel opened his discussion by setting and explaining the learning objectives he hoped the participants will learn. He also set up a topic outline that he stated he will follow throughout the event. He then presented a question that opened up the discussion for his first topic — Democracy. Mr. Arniel shared his insights about Philippine democracy and encouraged the participants to share their insights on the issue. “Democracy will not work on its own. We need to understand how it works and make it work through civic participation,” he stated.
Mr. Arniel connected the subject to the role of the youth as a civic participant, teaching the youth patriotism and nationalism and motivating their involvement in public and civic affairs. He then talked about the different aspects at which the youth shall learn and be educated and their rights to participate in any activity that promoted quality life and made the community or society a better place.
After mentioning the impact of youth on the community, he taught the participants about Information Disorder and how it affects the mindset of people who receive this false information. Mr. Arniel also showed the different types of Information Disorder: Misinformation, Misinformation, and Mal-information. He then pointed out the effects of each of these information disorders to our community as he exclaimed, “We live in an age of information disorder.” With this, Mr. Arniel shared different methods for fighting information disorder, such as proper research and utilization of information effectively. Moreover, he also gave some simple tips on fact-checking the data they see on the internet.
As his discourse concluded, the emcee then opened the floor for questions and answers for the participants to ask their inquiries. Afterward, Mr. Arniel was granted the certificate of appreciation as Mr. Jerry delivered his closing remarks.
