CEBU, PHILIPPINES—A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Cebu on September 30, causing numerous casualties and injuries, widespread power outages, and damage to roads and structures in parts of the central Philippines.
In a press release, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was located 19 kilometers northeast, offshore of Bogo City, Cebu, with an estimated depth of five kilometers.
The agency also warned that aftershocks could persist for several days to weeks, with 5,228 aftershocks already recorded as of October 4.
Additionally, according to data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) released on October 4, a total of 70 people were killed, 559 injured, and 457,554 individuals—or 128,294 families—were affected by the earthquake.
The NDRRMC also reported that 1,795 individuals, or 365 families, were taking temporary shelter in designated evacuation centers, while another 75,227 individuals, or 15,092 families, sought refuge in the homes of relatives, friends, and other locations.
Meanwhile, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited Bogo City on October 2 to check on communities affected by the calamity and pledged at least ₱150 million in financial assistance to the province.
In a situation briefing, the President elaborated that the financial aid will be allocated as follows: ₱75 million for Bogo City; ₱20 million each for San Remigio and Sogod; ₱10 million each for Bantayan, Daanbantayan, Madridejos, Santa Fe, Tabogon, Tabuelan, and Medellin; and the remaining amount for other repairs.
“This is not a one-time release. We will continue to monitor, coordinate with local leaders, and ensure that rehabilitation is on track and all necessary support is provided,” President Marcos said.
The President has also ordered the establishment of a “Tent City” in Cebu, built through the joint efforts of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and the Philippine Red Cross, to provide temporary shelter for families affected by the earthquake.
In the same briefing, agencies such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Transportation (DOTr), and the National Electrification Administration (NEA) updated the President about their respective situations and the measures taken to mitigate the impact of the earthquake.
The DSWD also assured that it has 300,000 family food packs ready for release from the Visayas Disaster Resource Center, which can produce up to 30,000 boxes per day.
Contingents from the Quezon City and Manila LGUs also traveled to Bogo City, Cebu, on the same day to provide initial aid, conduct damage assessments, and deliver medical assistance to earthquake victims.
