Second Grade Lesson Objectives
April 28-May 2
Spelling: We will begin unit 27 this week. This unit will be over words with the inflectional endings er and est. We will take our test on Friday. Please study every night.
Reading: We will begin Unit 5 in our Reading Series. The theme will be “Let’s Make a Difference” and the focus will be: What do good citizens do? We will be reading: A Boy Named Martin, A Difficult Decision, Grace For President, and Helping to Make Smiles. Students will be doing an interactive workbook that goes along with this week's unit focus. In phonics, we will be learning about the ou and ow dipthongs. In phonemic awareness, we will work on rhyming, segmenting, isolation, categorization, substitution, and blending. We will also be working on irregular plurals, summarization, point of view, and compound words. Our genre this week is realistic fiction. Our vocabulary words for the week are: champion, determined, issues, promises, responsibility, rights, volunteered, votes. We will work on the high frequency words: answer, been, body, build, head, heard, minutes, myself, pretty, pushed. Students will have time for reading Accelerated Reader books every other day.
Grammar: This week we will be working on pronouns.
Writing: In writing, we will continue our 5 paragraph opinion piece. We will work on cursive letters c and q this week in handwriting.
Reading Centers: 1. Work on Words 2. Work on writing 3. i-ready 4. Grammar 5. Vocabulary
During small group reading, students will focus on phonics, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary strategies on Monday. Students will read books on their level on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will take AR tests over the books on Thursday and will work on answering questions from a reading passage. On Friday, I will be working individually with students in areas of need.
Math: We will continue chapter 13: Length in Customary Units. We will have lessons on using an inch ruler, estimating lengths, measuring in inches and feet, measuring in yards, choosing a measuring tool, and displaying measurement data. We will do Big Brainz, i-ready, and IXL in math centers. During this time, I will have groups meeting with me for small group math.
Social Studies: We will be studying about George Washington Carver, Rosa Parks, and Benjamin Franklin.
