Equitable Grading Practices
The what, why, and how of improving your grading.
The what, why, and how of improving your grading.
Equitable grading begins with answering some hard questions about your core beliefs in education. You may want to make the switch NOW because that is what your students need. But before you jump in too fast, it is important to consider some questions:
a) How are your students experiencing your current grading system? What is working well? What isn't working well? How do you know?
b) Are there any ways your grading system exacerbates existing inequities in your classroom? Are there any ways it makes your classroom more equitable?
c) Who could you collaborate with in this work? What shared values and goals would drive a successful collaboration?
d) What grading reforms have you tried before? Do any approaches on this website (or elsewhere) get you excited to experiment? How can you engage in this work, in ways that are sustainable, reflective, growth-filled, and focused on students?
You will need to invest a little time before you implement these strategies, but they won't break your back.
These will require some significant time and energy to implement. Maybe you have a colleague that wants to help?
