What is Common Core Algebra?
The fundamental purpose of this course is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. Since it is built on the middle grades standards, this is a more ambitious version of Algebra than has generally been offered. Students will engage in methods for analyzing, solving and using functions.
Goals/Objectives:
This course will not only guide students through their preparation for the New York State Regents Examination in Algebra, but also provide ample opportunities for them to continue to grow as independent learners. The expected outcomes for this course include the ability to do the following:
· Apply algebraic procedures to a variety of problems.
· Make inferences based on probabilistic and statistical models.
· Develop logical, critical, and creative reasoning skills.
· Prepare for the NYS Integrated Algebra Regents Exam/Common Core Examination.
Course Topics:
· Relationships between quantities and reasoning with equations and their graphs
o Introduction to functions. Piecewise, quadratic, exponential, and analyzing graphs.
o The structure of expressions. Properties and operations with polynomials.
o Solving equations and inequalities.
