Ms. Gilbert Class Procedures for 2023-2024 School Year

Food/Beverages

No eating is permitted in class.

Students may bring water bottles or other capped drinks to class. Gallon bottles and jugs are not permitted.

Arriving to Class

Please make sure to be on time for class. If you are late, please remember 3 lates = 1 absence. If you are more than 20 minutes late to class, then it is an absence. Only passes from the main office, counselor, or nurse can excuse your lateness to class. Credit is lost in a course when 16 absences are reached.

**Please be aware that lateness can also impact your grade if you do not complete or finish tasks because of lateness.

Leaving the Classroom

One student may leave the room at a time. This year, passes will be done through the MINGA app. Since this is new, we will work through the process.

**Please be aware that being out of the room too long could result in an absence. It can also impact your grade if you do not complete or finish tasks because you are out too long.

 Grading Procedures

Your grade will be calculated by adding all the points earned on graded assignments (tests, quizzes, class work, graded checks, do nows, samples, out of class assignments) and dividing by the total number of points.

Explanation of the types of graded assignments

1.) Quizzes and tests: These assignments are typically worth 40 to 100 points.

Please note: All quizzes and tests are announced in advance. You will not be excused from a test or quiz if you are absent the day before it is given.

2.) Class work:  There are a variety of class work assignments: do nows/samples, graded checks, and general class work. Class work assignments vary in point value depending upon the length of the assignment.  Each class work assignment will be assigned a specific point value. Many assignments are graded on a combination of correctness and completion. However, you are permitted to use your notes to complete assignments. In most cases, you may also use a calculator.

It is not always possible to “make up” classwork such as “do nows/samples.” If you are absent when these assignments are given, they will not be included in your point total/grade calculation.

3.) Out of Class Assignments (OCA): Assignments designated as OCA vary in point value depending upon the length of the assignment. Points earned will be based on completeness.

Extra Credit

I do not give extra credit for Math League or other testing. I also do not give individual extra credit to bring up your grade.

Any extra credit opportunities will be made available to all students in a class. This could be in the form of an extra question on an assessment or attendance at a math movie night for example.

OCA policy for the Mathematics Department

Students who are present in class and missing their assignment on the day it is due will not get credit.  Once the corrections have been given out the assignment can no longer be accepted.  *Students who are absent on the due date must present their work upon their return for credit.

*Please note: Google Classroom submissions may be required if a student is not present in class when a submission is due.  Therefore, student should follow posted instructions and contact Ms. Gilbert with any concerns.

Long term projects that require more than a day will have a penalty of 10% for each day past the due date up to 5 days.  After 5 days, the grade will result in a zero.

Class Materials

Chromebook

      Pen or pencil

      Notebook, binder, and/or folder

Calculator – scientific or graphing           All Students are expected to have a calculator for class.

         Calculators will not be provided.

***Phones may be collected at the start of class, so do not plan on using your phone in place of a calculator.

Tech Devices

Phones should be put away the start of each class. If your phone is being used during a lesson, you will be asked to put it away. If it continues to be a distraction, the phone will need to be handed into the teacher. The phone will be returned before the end of class or when lesson/tasks for the day are completed.  If it is an ongoing issue, phone may be given to the vice principal.

Phones must be handed in for checks, quizzes, and tests. Phones may also be requested when do nows or samples are given and collected.

During assessments and tasks, you will need a calculator. You must provide your own calculator. I do not have a class set of calculators, nor can phones be used as calculators.

Other tech devices should be away during lessons and tasks. There will be times that Chromebook may be needed or helpful so please have yours with you.
