Assessment of learning is summative with the intention of assessing student achievement. The primary function of assessment of learning is a grade. In my classroom I use summarize assessment for reading using The Developmental Reading Assessment. Assessment for learning is formative, with the intention of supporting and advance learning. Feedback is a key aspect of assessment of learning, it allows students the opportunity to monitor and adjust their learning. In my classroom I use this type of assessment during guided reading. I am able to monitor and adjust my instruction based on student interactions and ideas. E-Portfolios address both assessment for and of learning because they contain digitized artifacts. Those artifacts can be in a variety of formats including, text, graphics, or multimedia elements. E-Portfolios may allow students to access their learning for a lifetime. E-Portfolios allow for evidence based learning because students engage in feedback and they encourage the exchange of ideas.
Lifewide learning requires an authentic setting that allows students to learn outside of a traditional classroom. The six functions of e-portfolios according to “An Overview of E-Portfolios,” are “planning educational programs, document knowledge, skills, abilities of learning, tracking and development within a program, findings job, evaluate a course, and monitor and evaluate performance (Lorenzo 2005). The function that supports lifewide learning is finding a job. Creating an E-Portfolio allows students to show potential employers a variety of work samples. Lifelong learning requires self motivation to pursue knowledge.E-Portfolios allow editing, allowing students to continuously adjust and monitor their thinking. “An Overview of E-Portfolios,” states that an issue with E-Portfolio is the upkeep, including, server maintenance and lifelong access. E-Portfolios are helpful for learners because they provide a platform to organize learning, philosophies, and artifacts.
