About Gene Luen Yang
Let's go down the rabbit hole.
Gene Luen Yang began his career as a computer engineer and quickly left it behind to work with children as a high school computer science teacher in California
He drew cartoons and published comics as a hobby while teaching. Eventually he began using comics as a way of teaching when he was out.
His first Graphic novel, American Born Chinese was published in 2006.
In 2016-2017 Yang served a two year term as the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature
His platform as the Ambassador was "Reading Without Walls"
He is a believer in the importance of using comics in the classroom and an advocate for getting more children reading.
Now he has many graphic novels and comics published. No matter where your interests fall, there is something for every one. Culture, history, computer science, sports, super heroes, you name it, you can likely find it in his work.
Social Media
A good way to find common interest you may have with an author, or see works in progress is to spend some time on an author's social media platforms. Gene Yang really give a back stage pass to his writing and drawing style as well as his interests and hobbies.
Ted Talk
Gene Yang is firm in his belief that comics should be in the classroom. In fact, he chose to speak on the topic when he was invited to speak with TedX. Listen to hear his very convincing explanation as to why this method is more useful than lectures or video lessons.
