Greenshaw Research School - Matthew Courtney
As the Education Endowment Foundation’s (EEF) Literacy Guidance Reports for both Early Years and Key Stage 1 remind us, ‘languages provides the foundation of thinking and should be prioritised’.
The first recommendation of all three EEF Guidance Reports for primary-aged children, focuses on developing children’s language capabilities.
Within these reports, both explicit and implicit approaches that teachers can use to support children’s language development are described. Several of these strategies recommended involve using books, and with good reason.

Evidence Snacks
By Peps McCrea
One of the main goals of school is to build meaningful learning. But what is it? And how do we achieve this?
The short answer (popularised by David Ausubel) is that making learning meaningful is largely the result of building connections with what we already know. The more connections we forge, the deeper our understanding and the more durable our memory. The opposite of meaningful learning occurs when we learn things by rote and build isolated islands of knowledge.

EEF blog: Leveraging learning behaviours: maximising opportunties for all pupils
By Freya Morrissey
Content Specialist for Learning Behaviours
It’s early afternoon and the class has, finally, settled. Jon and Chris have stopped prodding each other with their pens, Alex and Grace have ceased gossiping about whatever happened at lunchtime, and Chloe is no longer shouting out. Mischief has successfully been managed and everyone can get on with their work.
But across the classroom, very quietly, something is up with Alex.
Over the next fifteen minutes, under the radar, he achieves nothing except some innovative graffiti on his pencil case.

Building confidence and desire in struggling readers at Key Stage 2
When: Tue, Nov 14, 2023 · 4:00 PM ·
About this webinar
Some children enter KS2 lacking age-appropriate reading skills, and this results in issues beyond the acquisition of abilities. Frequently, several years of knowing that they are falling behind results in an understandably negative view of reading; this may be compounded by exposure to reading support material that looks and feels 'babyish'. This session will aim to address as many of these compounded issues as possible, with practical solutions and ideas for classroom practice and extra-curricular reading.
Everyone registered will receive the recording. If you're unable to attend on the day you will be able to watch on-demand later.
