Exploring self-regulation in the early years
By Lauren Grocott
Ever since the pandemic, Shelley has noticed more children arriving at her setting with lower starting points in their personal, social and emotional development (PSED) than ever before.
Her team reports that multiple children are having significant difficulties with managing their feelings. Not only that, but sharing and taking turns feels like a constant battle, and only a handful of children can engage with a short story for more than a couple of minutes at a time.

Adaptive teaching: What is it anyway?
What is it anyway?
By Alex Quigley
Adaptive teaching is the subtle, tricky, but compelling stuff of teaching. No lesson package you lift from the Internet can eliminate the necessity for adaptation and responsiveness.
This recognition that pupils learn differently, and that they have different needs, is one that we take for granted in education. But what we do about it is trickier and more contentious. In recent years, differentiation has fallen out of fashion (I wrote a TES column on the ‘death of differentiation’ HERE) and ‘adaptive teaching’ is now being promoted in its place.
It is not a new term or concept. In the Teacher Standards, standard number 5 states: “Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils’. In the more recent ECF, adaptive teaching is promoted as an “opportunity for all pupils to experience success, by adapting lessons, whilst maintaining high expectations for all, so that all pupils have the opportunity to meet expectations.”

How can maths and science teachers get the most out of edtech?
By Schools Week
A recent rapid literature review by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) about the use of multimedia tools for teaching maths and science suggests that human mediation may be just as important in determining a tool’s effectiveness for improving learning outcomes as the technical design of the tool itself.
But how can teachers ensure that they are bringing a human-centred approach to the technology they use in the classroom?

What do 'substantive' and 'disciplinary' mean when thinking about primary foundation subjects?
By HFL Education
In our previous blog, we explored how subject leadership of foundation subjects at primary has changed quite a bit in recent years.
One of the areas of change has been the language we use to talk about the curriculum. I don’t remember when I first heard ‘substantive’ and ‘disciplinary’ used in relation to the primary foundation subjects, but it was relatively recently.
At first, not understanding the terms, I avoided using them – not wanting to get it wrong. So, in this blog I’d like to take on the challenge of exploring them, to clarify what they mean and the implications for our curriculum in foundation subjects and how we teach.
