From Intent to Implementation

by Mary Myatt

A great deal of work has gone into the curriculum intent. For the most part, intent statements are in place, plans written up, and resources prepared. Virtually every school talks about an ambitious curriculum for every young person.

Yet there is sometimes a gap between the the high aspirations and what lands on children’s desks. We need to pay attention to whether the promise is being delivered. Does our curriculum do what it says on the tin?

1. What is geography?

2. What are your guiding principles for the teaching of geography?

3. …and what role does cognitive science have in this respect?

4. What is field-work?

5. How can we design effective/impactful field-work sessions?

6. You are a secondary teacher with a considerable number of feeder schools. If you could have a basic level of understanding across every pupil coming up from primary, what would it look like?

Raya and Olive are pretending to make cakes with playdough. Two friends come to join them, and they decide to have a birthday party. Olive fetches a jar of gems to use as decorations for their cakes.

“I wonder if there will be enough for everyone to have some,” ponders Raya.

“There are lots of gems, I think there are twenty gems,” says Olive.

“I think there are thirty gems,” replies Raya. The girls tip out the gems, share them out and count they have ten gems each.

Primary Art Curriculum Support: Be an Architect

Thursday 9th November 4.00-5.00pm GMT.

To support the launch of the new AccessArt Primary Art Curriculum, this hour long session will take you through the Be an Architect pathway.

This pathway introduces children to the idea that architects design and make buildings. Pupils are given the opportunity to explore architecture around them as well build their own architectural model.

These support sessions aim to build knowledge around how the curriculum pathways are constructed and how you can scaffold projects. Please come along if you are an art subject lead, a class teacher (the session will be useful whichever year group you teach in helping to build knowledge), or if you are interested in seeing how our new curriculum is constructed. We'll guide you through the pathway and give you the opportunity to try a couple of exercises for yourself.

This event is free and only open to AccessArt members.

This session will be recorded and available after the event to AccessArt members.
