Summer Reading Challenge

Last Friday children from across the school who had completed the Summer Reading Challenge were invited to the library at Tattenham Corner to celebrate their achievements with the Mayor.

We are very proud of all of the children and are pleased to see so many children reading for pleasure!

Reading Matters

We need your help!

Over the past few weeks, we have been completing an audit of the children's reading diaries to see who has been reading regularly at home and we need your help.

We are working really hard on trying to improve children's fluency in their reading and we know that regular daily reading really helps with this.

Please hear your children read at home as often as you can and let us know by recording this in their diary.

Did you know?

Children who read regularly at home will be awarded a raffle ticket, then at the end of the term they are in with a chance of winning a brand new book of their choice. Why not support your child to be in with a chance of earning themselves a new book.

Sporting Events

County Finals- Danone Nations Cup

On Monday our Year 5/6 girls football team took part in the county finals of Schools Football, Danone Nation Cup. The girls played 5 matches, they gave everything they had in each match and learned something from every experience.

We are very proud of you all!

Children's Mental Health Week

On Monday 7th February we will be joining in with Children's Mental Health Week alongside the charity Place 2Be.

At Shawley, we are taking this opportunity to introduce our new pupil wellbeing strategy, HAPPY to the children.

Within this week we will also be welcoming a team of family support colleagues from the LEO Academy Trust who will be delivering a parents workshop based around: ‘Does your child worry a lot? Do you need strategies to help them?’.

This will take place in the school hall on Tuesday 8th February between 9.30-11.00am. Please complete this form if you would like to attend.

Supporting our wildlife

In forest school, the Year 3/4 children have been developing their knowledge of common birds and were thinking about how they could encourage a more diverse range of birds to the area.

The children worked in teams to create their own bird feeders. We cannot wait to see them all hanging in the trees.

We will keep our eye out for any new species of birds too!

A meeting link will be sent ahead of the meeting as this will be held remotely. The meeting will cover general ways you can help in school, hearing children read, and safeguarding.

Following this meeting, we will start the process of getting all the paperwork done so we can start having volunteers after half term.

Staff Spotlight

Meet Ms Spare

A little bit about me: I teach in Elephants in Year 5 / 6 and this is my fourth year at Shawley.

My Favourites

Hobbies - I love reading, dancing and travelling…all of which I need to do more of at the moment!

Food - My favourite would have to be chocolate, but I do love Thai and Mexican food; the list goes on.

Drink - Cup of tea.

Colour - I find it difficult to pick just one colour - red, turquoise, yellow…

Animal - One of my favourite animals is the elephant (and not because I work in Elephants). As pets - it’s cats.

Book - One of my favourite books is Charlotte’s Web by E.B White. I loved this book as a child and remember reading it with my mum.

Penalty Notices

A reminder to parents/carers that if they take their children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not need to be consecutive), they will be liable to receive a penalty notice. Currently the amount payable under a penalty notice is £60.00 per parent/carer per child if paid within 21 days. Thereafter the amount increases to £120.00 if paid between 21 and 28 days. If the penalty notice remains unpaid after 28 days, the Local Authority will consider a prosecution in the Magistrates Court. Please note that penalty notices are issued per parent/carer per child so a family of two parents and two children will receive 4 penalty notices.

Shawley Fundraisers

School Lottery

Shawley's school lottery has been set up specifically to raise money and make a difference for our children! It's a fantastic way to bring parents, carers, staff and the wider community together, in partnership with our school, and at the same time give something back. We hope to raise funds that can support and enrich the education of our children - we aim to provide extra resources for the children, improve the school environment as well as run extracurricular activities such as music, art and sport.

Join today! Click here to access the Your School Lottery website to learn more about how it works and how to join.

Your support is greatly appreciated and we wish you good luck!
