RUDOLPH RUN - FRIDAY 3RD DECEMBER

The children got to be Reindeers today, Friday 3rd December, as they competed in the Rudolph Run to raise money for St. Raphael's Hospice.

If family and friends would like to sponsor your child, there is still time, please find the JustGiving Page below:

https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/leo-academy-trust-bf-rr2

Where does your money go?

The money raised will help St Raphael’s to provide exceptional end of life care to almost 1,000 patients and their families every year who live in Merton & Sutton. 75% of their running costs rely on the incredible support and generosity of the community. During this difficult time for all of us, they need you now more than ever!

As we are a Rights Respecting school, part of which involves looking at Global citizenship and supporting our community, the children will learn about supporting others in their local area.

We really appreciate your support and hope that you’ll have fun helping us raise money for St Raphael’s Hospice.

EARLY YEARS

We are having so much fun in Early Years! We have been doing lots of singing in preparation for our Nativity plays. We hope you enjoy them!

Our role play areas are now transformed into Santa's Workshops and the children are busy designing toys for the elves to make. Look at the lovely princess designs below!

In Maths, we have been comparing lengths. We had to place the green strips of paper in order from longest to shortest to make a Christmas tree shape. What lovely trees we made!

In our Literacy, we are working so hard to sound out simple words and write letter shapes correctly. Our teachers are so impressed with the tricky words we have been learning too.

In Pearl Class we have been making gingerbread men- the smells from the kitchen have been delicious! We are carefully decorating them - I hope they taste as good as they smell!

YEAR 1

What an exciting couple of weeks we've had in Y1! Our reading groups are now up and running every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning. The account details for Big Cat have been sent home and you should now be receiving a copy of the text we've read in school every Friday. Please make sure you read these books every day to help develop fluency and expression. Homework is being set on Seesaw every Friday so please help your child to complete their tasks.

In maths, we have been counting to twenty. The children have been learning to count on from ten when counting groups - we used the tens frames to help us make the ten and then kept on counting! Our new literacy book has had us trying to persuade Peter rabbit to be a good boy and stay out of Mr McGregor's garden! We concluded our science topic on amazing animals including humans with a quiz!

Finally, a massive well done to Jade Class for their Assembly this week. I am so proud of all the children ... a first for them in so many ways.🌈😀

YEAR 2

Its been a fantastic week in Year 2, not only have we tried really hard with our activities but the cheeky elves have made a visit! We are making sure we continue to work hard so the elves can tell Santa all about it! In Maths we have been learning all about multiplication and making equal groups. We are now confident in our 2s, 5s and 10s times tables and are ready to tackle division next week. In English we have been comparing the Big Bag Pig to how he appears at the beginning of the story and how he changes towards the end. In Topic we have loved continuing to learn about Victorians as we looked closely at some Victorian classroom artefacts and asked lots of questions about the Dunce's hat! In RE we listened to Mrs Underwood's assembly and discovered all about Advent and in Computing we learned how to stay safe online by questioning whether our personal information should be shared with others.

YEAR 3

Year 3 had a lovely week of learning. In Maths we continued to learn about multiplication and division, making groups and finding the product of two numbers. We are getting very confident with out times tables now and our results in the 144 tests show how much we have improved so far. In English we have learned to write a persuasive letter to our MP asking him to consider plastic pollution and find ways to tackle this problem. Children have created a poster using Adobe Spark to show the damage to the environment caused by plastic. In Science we have continued investigating how magnets work and we have created a poster to show how a magnet attracts iron filings. We have also seen how a magnet can make cereal move due to its iron content. In our topic lessons we have learned about the oceans in the world and we have located them on a map. We also learned about Ben Nevis and used Google Maps to explore this amazing mountain in 360. We continue to learn about our rights as children, discussing the articles of the week and making sure we are all have a right to education and we are treated with respect and dignity no matter what our background is.

YEAR 4

Year 4 have had a fantastic couple of weeks that started with you remote visit with a real Antarctic Explorer (Al Sylvester). He showed us how he chose a team, prepared them for Antarctica and how the trip progressed. We asked lots of amazing questions and were fascinated by the answers. This inspired us in our topic work to chart features of Antarctica on maps and research how Antarctica changes due to climate change. In English, we have written Kennings poems about Polar animals. They take the form of a riddle and you need to guess the animal before it is revealed at the end of the poem. In Maths, we have continued to practice our division using our times tables to help us. In RE, we have continued to find ways that Jewish people show their commitment to God by exploring the ceremonies of Bat Mitzvah and Bar Mitzvah and exploring Mitzvah Day. We applied this to our own lives and thought about ways we show our commitment to things e.g. our football team, Cubs or Brownies.

YEAR 5

Year have been very busy this week at school. We have been reviewing our knowledge of telling the time and then using this knowledge to read timetables. We have written some fantastic nonets for writing this week. A nonet is a nine-line poem. The first line contains nine syllables, the second line contains eight, the third line contains seven, and so on. The last line of nonet poetry contains one syllable. It really challenged us to think about the structure carefully. In topic, we discovered that Captain Falcon Scott's trip was a bit of a disaster, we debated whether the trip had failures due to bad planning or bad luck. In Science, we explored day and night and started to understand how the Earth spins on it's axis.

YEAR 6

Year 6 have had another great week. In maths, we have started tacking decimals. The children have learnt how to convert decimals into fractions, multiply and divide decimals and how using a place value chart could help solve word problems. In English, we explored a new text called 'The Hero Twins Against the Lords of Death'. The children have written some fantastic play scripts linked to this and some informative instruction texts on how to play the Mayan game, Pok A Tok. They are really becoming experts at editing their work, ensuring they have included all of the correct features that are needed and the year 6 writing checklist. To finish our Science topic, the children have created some phenomenal double page spreads all about animals including humans. Take a look at some examples below.

Times Table Rockstars:

Here are the results of our weekly battles between year group classes. Keep practising so you can beat the other class.

Brookfield's top scorers on TTRockstars this week are:

Max (Opal), Alfie (Topaz), Alex (Moonstone) and Marcus (Sapphire)

Highest scoring class at Brookfield this week is: Topaz with 1889 points.

COUNT ON US MATHS CLUB

This week, our fabulous mathematicians have had the chance to practise their mental maths skills to quickly find 24 in the popular 24Game. There are so many different ways to solve each game and these children are really quick to identify them. We had a go at code breaking using a frame template. They worked in teams to crack the code as fast as possible, competing with the other teams.

SPORTING EVENTS, FIXTURES AND FESTIVALS!

This week has been a very busy week for sports at Brookfield where we have taken part in a wide range of different events and festivals.

Our Sports Media team have written reports from two events which we took part in last week:

"Last Wednesday, the girls football team attended the Danone Nations Cup Competition. There were 11 schools in the competition in 4 separate groups. Our team was split into two teams where we played against different teams. We have gained some great experiences from taking part in this competition and we played in some very challenging games. Lottie scored her first goal for the girls team which was great and our only goal in the competition. We had a great morning together and were able to develop some skills such as our communication and teamwork, We were also able to have lots of fun."

Written by Zakya, Evie-Rose and Aarav.

"Last Wednesday, some of the Y6 boys football team took part in a football competition at Crystal Palace Training Ground. Their first match was against Cheam Common, almost winning 1-0 after Austin’s goal in the 5th minute of the match. However, Cheam Common equalised in the last minute of the game, making the result 1-1. The second game was against Highview. It was 0-0 for most of the game until Alfie scored in the final minute, the match ended 1-0 to us. The third game was against Oasis Ryelands and the final score was 3-0 to us. Leyton scored the first goal and shortly after Alfie scored and doubled our lead. Jake rounded off the scoring with the third and final goal moments before the final whistle blew. The fourth match was against St Mary’s Sutton and sadly, we lost 2-0. We came 3rd in our group and missed out on going to the quarter finals. Overall we had a great day and were even lucky enough to meet the Crystal Palace u23’s Goalkeeper and defender."

RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOLS - UNICEF

At Brookfield we are working towards our Rights Respecting Schools silver award and children are learning about the rights of the child.

Friday 3rd of December is International Day of People with Disabilities and we have been looking at articles 2 and 23. These ensure children with disabilities a right to live a full and decent life with dignity, without discrimination. Not all disabilities are visible, so this year we want to increase awareness of invisible disabilities such as mental health disorders, chronic pain and fatigue.

For more information about the rights of the child click here.

ABSENCE

What to do if my child is absent?

Please can we remind all parents/carers that if your child is going to be absent from school that you use the Brookfield Absence Form (instead of leaving a message on the answerphone).

We know that illness is unavoidable and to be expected, especially at the moment due to Covid-19. Knowing whether pupils are going to be absent from school and the reasons for any absences is an important safeguarding issue for the school.

It is therefore, vitally important that if your child is not going to be in school that you complete our the form by 9:15am.

The form has 3 separate sections for Coronavirus Related / General Illness / Other Reason for Absence (ie. appointments).

The form can also be found on the Weekly Newsletters and Brookfield Website home page under Parents - Absence and Attendance:

http://www.brookfield.sutton.sch.uk/875/absence-and-attendance

Please note that you ONLY need to complete the form if your child is off school you do not need to call and leave a message.

If for any reason you are unable to access the form then please either call the school and leave a message on the school absence line on 020 8644 8616 opt 1 (you do not need to speak to a member of the office staff) or email the office on: bfoffice@leoacademytrust.co.uk.

Please note that if your child is unwell for 5 or more days (unrelated to Covid-19), medical evidence may be requested.

HOUSE TEAMS

At Brookfield Primary school, we use a house point reward system to recognise the positive behaviour of our pupils. The children love earning house points and are always very excited to add their tokens to the overall total. Each week, the house points will be counted up and this will be shared with the children during achievement assemblies.

At the end of each half term, the winning house will be awarded with a ‘Mufti Day’ just for them. The dates for each ‘Winning House Mufti’ are below.

SCHOOL LUNCHES

School Meals

PLEASE NOTE: Price increase from September 2021 - £2.35 a day.

Our school catering provision is offered to all children across the Trust by LEO Catering, our in house catering supplier. The menus are created and refreshed three times a year, catering for children with allergies and are available to view below. Our menus follow government food standard guidelines and offer excellent value at £2.35 a day for a main meal, dessert, choice of salad bar, fresh bread daily and vegetarian and Halal options. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive a free meal funded by the government's Universal Infant Free School Meal grant and we encourage anyone in any year group who thinks they may be eligible to apply for free school meal funding to apply.

Menus are available here www.leoacademytrust.co.uk/647/school-meals or from the office foyer.

Children in Years 3-6 will need to pay for their meals via Arbor. Cost of a school meal is £2.35 per day, £11.75 per week. Please ensure there are sufficient funds in your child's account in advance, otherwise no school dinner can be ordered and you will need to provide your child with a packed lunch.

For those children who do still bring in a packed lunch, you may have noticed that your child brings home some of their lunch as we encourage the children to take home uneaten food. This enables you to see exactly what your child is eating at lunchtimes and adapt their lunch accordingly. We ask that packed lunches include healthy options in line with our Healthy School status. Children should not bring fizzy drinks or chocolate bars to school.

We have a number of children with nut allergies in school which means that all staff and parents must be vigilant about ingredients we use in school and items put into lunch boxes. No nuts should be put into packed lunches.

REMINDERS

Contacting your child's class teacher: If you need to contact your child's class teacher please email the school office on bfoffice@leoacademytrust.co.uk and they will forward the emails during the working day for the teacher or Senior Leader to act upon and respond.

  • Please do not to approach the class teachers in the mornings during drop off time unless it is urgent.

  • Please make an appointment to see the class teacher via the school office.

  • KS2 pupils do not finish their school day/ learning till 3:20pm, therefore, if you are waiting on the playground to collect your child at the end of the day, please ensure that you stand away from the classroom windows and door so as not to disturb their learning.

  • The climbing frames are not to be used before and after school, parents please remind your children of this school rule. In addition, children are not to use their scooters or bikes on school grounds and must walk to the side of them.

  • If using private vehicles, please remember to park thoughtfully and not park in front of the local residents’ drives or on the yellow zig zag lines in front of the school. We would like to see as many families and staff as possible walking, cycling or scooting to school.

  • If your child suffers from asthma they must have an in-date, spare inhaler in school at all times along with a spacer. These should be given to the office who will store them securely. Please check on a yearly basis that the inhaler is still fit for purpose. Please also ensure any child with an allergy has appropriate medication in school, i.e Epipen/Piriton etc. This could be life-saving.

  • We ask that pupils bring in their own water bottles daily. The bottles need to be clearly labelled with the child's name and only have water in them.

  • Please leave buggies and prams outside the school buildings, as it could be very hazardous in an emergency. Currently, the office is operating on a 'one in and one out' policy. Please ensure you wear a mask if you enter the school building.

  • Please remember that all children in KS2 are encouraged to bring fresh fruit or vegetables to school for a mid-morning snack during playtime. Many children are really hungry by lunchtime and will be happier and learn better if they have eaten something at playtime.

  • Only children in Year 6 are permitted to bring a mobile phone into school and only if absolutely necessary. Phones are stored in the office during the school day.

  • No pets in the playground please especially dogs! (Excluding guide dogs). This includes owners carrying their dog in their arms. We cannot permit any pets on the premises.

  • Please do not let your children climb on the climbing frames in the KS1 or KS2 playground.

  • No smoking is allowed anywhere in the school or grounds.

  • I would like to urge parents to remember to park thoughtfully and not park in front of the local residents’ drives or on the yellow zig zag lines in front of the school. We would like to see as many families and staff as possible walking, cycling or scooting to school.

  • Please ensure that you look at your Arbor account as we are a paperless school and all information is sent via this portal. If you have any queries, please contact the school office.
