SCHOOL TOURS FOR PROSPECTIVE NEW PARENTS

We are excited to announce that we are able to host tours for prospective new Nursery and Reception parents. Please can we ask you to share this information with your friends and families who are looking for a primary school. The booking form and information can be found on our website: http://www.brookfieldprimary.com/

POLITE REMINDERS

Contacting your child's class teacher: If you need to contact your child's class teacher please email the school office on bfoffice@leoacademytrust.co.uk and they will forward the emails during the working day for the teacher or Senior Leader to act upon and respond.

Also, could we remind parents/carers not to approach the class teachers in the mornings during drop off time unless it is urgent. Please make an appointment to see the class teacher via the school office. KS2 pupils do not finish their school day/ learning till 3:20pm, therefore, if you are waiting on the playground to collect your child at the end of the day, please ensure that you stand away from the classroom windows and door so as not to disturb their learning.

The climbing frames are not to be used before and after school, parents please remind your children of this school rule. In addition, children are not to use their scooters or bikes on school grounds and must walk to the side of them.

If using private vehicles, please remember to park thoughtfully and not park in front of the local residents’ drives or on the yellow zig zag lines in front of the school. We would like to see as many families and staff as possible walking, cycling or scooting to school.

PUPIL ABSENCE

What to do if my child is absent?

Please can we remind all parents/carers that if your child is going to be absent from school that you use the Brookfield Absence Form (instead of leaving a message on the answerphone).

We know that illness is unavoidable and to be expected, especially at the moment due to Covid-19. Knowing whether pupils are going to be absent from school and the reasons for any absences is an important safeguarding issue for the school.

It is therefore, vitally important that if your child is not going to be in school that you complete our the form by 9:15am.

The form has 3 separate sections for Coronavirus Related / General Illness / Other Reason for Absence (ie. appointments).

The form can also be found on the Weekly Newsletters and Brookfield Website home page under Parents - Absence and Attendance:

http://www.brookfield.sutton.sch.uk/875/absence-and-attendance

Please note that you ONLY need to complete the form if your child is off school you do not need to call and leave a message.

If for any reason you are unable to access the form then please either call the school and leave a message on the school absence line on 020 8644 8616 opt 1 (you do not need to speak to a member of the office staff) or email the office on: bfoffice@leoacademytrust.co.uk.

Please note that if your child is unwell for 5 or more days (unrelated to Covid-19), medical evidence may be requested.

SCHOOL FUND

School Fund

School Fund Contributions 2021/2022

We pride ourselves on offering our children varied and exciting experiences and activities that help to support their learning of the curriculum. The School Fund will allow us to provide additional activities across all year groups.

We have a voluntary school fund donation of £10 a term / £30 a year per child or £40 for a family if there are siblings at the school. Parents can pay for School Fund online via our Arbor payment system.

We would like to thank you for your support.

COVID UPDATES

Please ensure you continue to read all Covid related communication emailed to you from the school

Updated guidance, please click here for a useful flowchart and FAQ for interpreting LFT test results and the required actions.

One of the main changes to the guidance to note is:

All identified close contacts of a positive case (confirmed PCR) must complete their required isolation period. In addition to this, all household and identified close contacts of the case would also need to get a PCR test during their isolation period.

PCR tests can be booked at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/check-if-you-have-coronavirus-symptoms/

All classrooms will continue to be ventilated (windows will be open). Parents and visitors to the school will be expected to continue wearing masks when on school premises.

From 1 March 2021, if you’re a member of a household, childcare bubble or support bubble of staff or a pupil you can get a twice-weekly test:

  • through your employer if they offer testing to employees

  • at a local test site

  • by collecting a home test kit from a test site

  • by ordering a home test kit online

Get a test through your employer - your workplace may offer rapid lateral flow testing to you. Contact your employer to find out more.

Take a test at a rapid lateral flow test site - you can take a rapid lateral flow test at a local site. Testing at these sites is assisted, which means you will swab yourself under the supervision of a trained operator. You will need to book an appointment. Find your nearest rapid lateral flow test site.

Collect test kits - you can collect up to 4 home test kits at a local collection point. Each kit contains 7 tests. Anyone 18 or over can collect. You can check online if the location is busy before you go. The online service to find your nearest home test kit collection point will be available shortly.

Order home test kits online - if you cannot get tested at your workplace, or are unable to go to a test site or collect test kits, you can order a home test kit online. Do not order online if you can get a test through other methods. This frees up home delivery for those who need it most. Order rapid lateral flow home test kits

What twice-weekly testing involves

You will be asked to:

  • take a test twice a week (every 3 or 4 days apart) - we advise Sunday and Wednesday evening.

  • report every result to NHS Test and Trace on the same day you take the test Report your test result online or by calling 119.

If anyone tests positive or gets coronavirus symptoms, they should tell the school and:

A negative result means the test did not find signs of coronavirus. But this does not guarantee you do not have coronavirus, so you should keep following all coronavirus advice including:

  • regular handwashing

  • social distancing

  • wearing a face covering where recommended

We are very excited to be launching a new reading challenge across the North Cheam Hub.

Both Brookfield and Cheam Park Farm would like to revamp and develop their classroom book corners with up to date and vibrant books to encourage the children's love of reading.

We have been set the challenge of reading 5,000 books across both schools before the end of November 2021.

Please encourage your children to read as many books as possible.

We would be really grateful if you could donate to this wonderful cause. Please click on this link: North Cheam Hub Reading Challenge.

Met Police Christmas Tree Appeal Poster Competition

The Met Police's annual Christmas Tree Project aims to give a present to a child in your borough who might not otherwise receive one. And to advertise this great campaign, the Commissioner has tasked the children of London with creating a poster design. The winning design will be invited to turn on the Christmas Tree lights with the Commissioner outside New Scotland Yard. Thank you to our talented artists who completed these wonderful entries in their own time; we are very impressed with your creativity and ideas. Good luck everyone!

Black History Month

While black history is celebrated year round, Black History Month is marked annually. It recognises and values the inspirational individuals and events that have shaped British and Worldwide history. During Black History Month, we remember and celebrate the important people from the past and also those who contribute to and help our society today. We explored Harriet Tubman's underground railroad route and learned about how this brave lady managed to help slaves escape to find freedom. We looked at current figureheads like Barack Obama and Marcus Rashford. It has been a fantastic month of learning about their achievements.

SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD

Friday 22nd October is the annual celebration day for Show Racism the Red Card. Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) is the UK’s largest anti-racism educational charity. It was established in January 1996, thanks in part to a donation by then Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop. Anti-racism awareness is something that Brookfield supports and we have been exploring this with the children this week. Anti-racism awareness not only happens through discussion but also in day to day like, for example, footballers setting an example by taking the knee. We will continue to support diversity and anti-racism at Brookfield to help create an inclusive environment for all.

Year 6 LEO Pupil Parliament Representatives

Year 6 Sports Captains

Early Years

In Reception, we have been learning about the story 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'. We made WANTED posters so that we could find Goldilocks. We acted out the story and sang the Goldilocks song- please ask us to show you the actions and words! We learnt about the word 'sorry' and why it is important to say sorry - we think that Goldilocks should say sorry to Baby Bear for breaking his chair!

In maths, we have been learning to securely understand numbers to 5 and have been working at writing our numbers too.

Year 1

Year one has yet again had a busy couple of weeks. The children have enjoyed our book 'Peace at Last' and have learned actions to help retell the story orally and draw a story map before writing it. In maths, we have been adding within ten and solving number problems. We had great fun making an old-fashioned toy and also getting creative making fish. The children were very good at recalling facts about fish as part of our science work. We have been celebrating Black History Month by learning about different people from the past. People who have achieved their dreams and have made positive changes to our world. We found out about Rosa Parks and Bessie Coleman.

Year 2

Year 2 have been working incredibly hard during this final week of the half term. We began studying a new religion 'Hinduism'. During our introduction to the religion we found out all about the different Gods and Goddesses within the religion. In science, we completed a strength experiment. We made our own predictions as to which material would be the strongest and which would be the weakest. We had lots of fun experimenting! Maths has been very challenging this week however Year 2 have shown amazing resilience with the challenge. We have begun looking at addition with renaming. It is a challenging method but all children have worked hard with their understanding.

Year 3

Year 3 had another successful week to be proud of. In Maths we continued to learn to add and subtract 3-digit numbers with renaming and we used Base 10 resources to help us with our understanding of regrouping. In English, we wrote the exciting story of Akimbo and the Elephants, making sure we included fronted adverbials and prepositions. We then wrote a review of the book, which we recommend everyone to read. We watched an assembly about safety from the NSPCC and we learned that we have the right to be safe. We then completed some activities, including our own happy and safe chart and a chatter box. We had the best Africa Day learning a lot about the countries in Africa, we created beautiful landscapes and we used the VR headsets to explore this amazing continent.

Year 4

Year 4 have been incredibly busy the last two weeks. In writing, we have been creating a newspaper report about a new Roman God discovered under the football pitch at school. We interviewed each other using Flipgrid and used this to help us create witness reports in our article. In Maths , we have been exploring different ways to subtract four digit numbers with renaming. In Reading, we have practised summarising ideas in our texts. In Science, we have been creating switches that we could use in our electrical circuits. We visited Wimbledon Synagogue through a Zoom call and toured the Synagogue, discovered its features, examined the Torah and witnessed how Shabbat is celebrated. We asked sensible and thought provoking questions and could explain the new vocabulary we had learnt. We also discovered how Jewish people celebrate Harvest, (Sukkot) and made group Sukkahs, which are the shelters that Sukkot is celebrated in. In Design Technology, we designed made and evaluated a Roman shield.

Year 5

Year 5 have had a busy but productive two weeks. We have started exploring factors, multiples and prime numbers in Maths. We are also looking at column multiplication. The children have been working hard to show show squared and cubed look when we use manipulatives to make them. We have written another narrative in English but this time we looked at the story from Kensuke's point of view and we practised writing in first person- we are becoming very confident at using relative clauses and adding parenthesis to our writing. We have been spending extra time learning about how to Stay Safe at school . We revised the names of the safeguarding team, discussed what bullying is and spoke about adults we can talk to if we ever feel upset about something. We had the most fun in Topic this week as we had our Explorer Day! There was dress up, map making, ship building and planning a budget for a Polar Trip.

Year 6

Year 6 have had a super week learning extremely hard! In maths, we have started tackling common multiples, common factors, prime numbers and composite numbers. In English, we were tasked with writing our own narratives in the role as the Warden, the lady in charge of Camp Green Lake. We carefully planned out our writing ensuring we were meeting the success criteria. We worked together and shared ideas. Carrying on with our Black History topic this month, we explored the influence Nelson Mandela had in society. We looked at how resilient he was growing up and how we could use some of his strength today in our own lives. We were also very lucky to have a visit from Steve Welding. He discussed the importance of staying safe online and we had some informative discussions throughout.

RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOLS - UNICEF

At Brookfield we are working towards our Rights Respecting Schools silver award and children are learning about the rights of the child. At the beginning of the year, we looked closely at articles 28 and 29 which tell us about how children have the right to education and how they should all recognise their own talents.

This month, as we celebrate Black History Month, we concentrate on articles 2, 12 and 30. These articles emphasise that all children, no matter who they are, where they live, where they come from and what language they speak, they all have the right to be treated fairly and to practise their culture, language and religion.

On Friday 15th, Brookfield children watched an assembly on child safety from the NSPCC. They learned that all children have the right to be safe and the right to speak and be heard. This is stated in Articles 12 and 19.

For more information about the rights of the child, please click here.

ATTENDANCE

Note: End of Year Pupil School Reports - Attendance

Due to the unprecedented times and the disruption caused to the children's school attendance this past academic year we have made the decision to not report their attendance data on the End of Year Pupil School Reports.

You will be aware that the school does not authorise any holidays. Very rarely we are able to authorise leave in exceptional circumstances. You must complete a ‘Request for Special Leave’ form in order for the request to be sanctioned.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS, because…

  • Children with good attendance achieve much better in their learning

  • Time off disrupts learning for your child, and also for the rest of the class

  • Children who miss school miss out on their right to a full education

  • It is your legal responsibility to ensure that your child attends school regularly

  • Persistent unauthorised absence could lead to court action, including fines

Attendance 96% to 100% - 0 to 7 days missed per year – your child’s good attendance will give them every chance of being a successful learner who makes good progress.

Attendance 92% to 95.9% - 8 to 15 days missed per year – you should try to improve your child’s attendance to make sure they have the best possible chance of success at school.

Attendance 90% to 91.9% - 16 to 19 days missed per year – your child’s attendance is dangerously close to falling to a level which can stop them making progress at school.

Attendance below 90% - 20 or more days missed per year – your child is considered a ‘persistent absentee’ in government statistics, and their poor attendance is putting them at serious risk of underachieving at school.

DID YOU KNOW

½ day missed every week = 90% attendance

1 day missed every week = 80% attendance

1 school year at 90% attendance = 4 whole weeks of lessons MISSED

1 school year at 80% attendance = 8 whole weeks of lessons MISSED

By the time a pupil is persistently absent (85% attendance) they have missed 6 weeks or half a term of schooling.

The simple message is: the greater the attendance, the greater the achievement.

Please where possible make dental, medical or other appointments during the holidays or out of school hours. If the appointment is during school hours we will require an appointment letter/card as proof of the appointment. If the appointment is urgent or last minute, please advise the school as soon as possible. Please do not keep your son or daughter out of school the whole day when they have appointments. When a child is collected early for an appointment it is disruptive for the class and the office staff.

Praise and reward good attendance at home and at school. During the year we will reward termly 100% attendance with certificates. Bronze certificate for 100% attendance for one term, silver certificate for 100% attendance for two terms and gold certificate for 100% attendance for three terms.

If a school can improve attendance by 1%, we will see a 5-6% improvement in attainment (Department for Education). Please help us and your son or daughter by ensuring their attendance remains above 97%, allowing them to achieve their full potential.

TRAVEL TO SCHOOL

As you know we encourage families to walk, cycle or scoot to school where possible. I would like to remind you - cycling and scooting are not permitted on the school premises. Anybody caught doing so will be asked to get off their scooter or leave their scooter outside the school gates. Please park bikes and scooters safely and securely and ensure they are clearly named.

Safer parking at the school gates

We realise that there are some parents/carers who have no alternative but to drive their children to school, however, many are driving short distances where walking is a real option. Even those who have to drive to school can do their bit by parking away from the school entrance and walking for part of the journey.

What can you do to help keep everyone safe around the school gates?

  • Please do park thoughtfully and not park in front of the local residents’ drives.

  • Please don’t block the road - emergency vehicles and other traffic may need access.

  • Please don't park on yellow lines, zig-zags or block the school entrance.

  • Please don't park on the pavement, across dropped kerbs or residents’ driveways.

  • Please don't park opposite or within 10 metres of a junction.

  • Please don't park where you will cause inconvenience to other road users.

  • Please don't leave your vehicle with the engine still running as the children and adults nearby will be inhaling those dangerous fumes.

  • Please don't stop in the middle of the road to drop your child off, even for a few seconds.

These changes make a real difference to the congestion around school, making the school run less stressful and far safer for everyone. Not only that but they will help your child’s education. Research has shown that children who walk or cycle to school are more receptive to learning at the start of the school day than those who travel to school by car. Stopping or Parking on the yellow zigzags is illegal and is endangering your child.

Please park safely.

Walk to school and save fuel, if you can!

SCHOOL LUNCHES

School Meals

PLEASE NOTE: Price increase from September 2021 - £2.35 a day.

Our school catering provision is offered to all children across the Trust by LEO Catering, our in house catering supplier. The menus are created and refreshed three times a year, catering for children with allergies and are available to view below. Our menus follow government food standard guidelines and offer excellent value at £2.30 a day for a main meal, dessert, choice of salad bar, fresh bread daily and vegetarian and Halal options. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive a free meal funded by the government's Universal Infant Free School Meal grant and we encourage anyone in any year group who thinks they may be eligible to apply for free school meal funding to apply.

Menus are available in the office foyer and can also be downloaded from the school website.

Children in Years 3-6 will need to pay for their meals via Arbor. Cost of a school meal is £2.30 per day, £11.50 per week. Please ensure there are sufficient funds in your child's account in advance, otherwise no school dinner can be ordered and you will need to provide your child with a packed lunch.

For those children who do still bring in a packed lunch, you may have noticed that your child brings home some of their lunch as we encourage the children to take home uneaten food. This enables you to see exactly what your child is eating at lunchtimes and adapt their lunch accordingly. We ask that packed lunches include healthy options in line with our Healthy School status. Children should not bring fizzy drinks or chocolate bars to school.

We have a number of children with nut allergies in school which means that all staff and parents must be vigilant about ingredients we use in school and items put into lunch boxes. No nuts should be put into packed lunches.

REMINDERS

  • If your child suffers from asthma they must have an in-date, spare inhaler in school at all times along with a spacer. These should be given to the office who will store them securely. Please check on a yearly basis that the inhaler is still fit for purpose. Please also ensure any child with an allergy has appropriate medication in school, i.e Epipen/Piriton etc. This could be life-saving.

  • We ask that pupils bring in their own water bottles daily. The bottles need to be clearly labelled with the child's name and only have water in them.

  • Please leave buggies and prams outside the school buildings, as it could be very hazardous in an emergency. Currently, the office is operating on a 'one in and one out' policy. Please ensure you wear a mask if you enter the school building.

  • Please remember that all children in KS2 are encouraged to bring fresh fruit or vegetables to school for a mid-morning snack during playtime. Many children are really hungry by lunchtime and will be happier and learn better if they have eaten something at playtime.

  • Only children in Year 6 are permitted to bring a mobile phone into school and only if absolutely necessary. Phones are stored in the office during the school day.

  • No pets in the playground please especially dogs! (Excluding guide dogs). This includes owners carrying their dog in their arms. We cannot permit any pets on the premises.

  • Please do not let your children climb on the climbing frames in the KS1 or KS2 playground.

  • No smoking is allowed anywhere in the school or grounds.

  • I would like to urge parents to remember to park thoughtfully and not park in front of the local residents’ drives or on the yellow zig zag lines in front of the school. We would like to see as many families and staff as possible walking, cycling or scooting to school.

  • Please ensure that you look at your Arbor account as we are a paperless school and all information is sent via this portal. If you have any queries, please contact the school office.

Brookfield PTFA

Please click and see the latest letter from the PTFA

What is the Parent, Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA)?

The PTFA is a voluntary organisation that offers parents opportunities to become involved and to contribute to the enrichment of the school experience for their children. One of the primary functions of the PTFA is to provide the children with resources and opportunities above and beyond the statutory provision that is provided. Brookfield PTFA have successfully organised several events to fundraise for the children at Brookfield. The PTFA also offers parents the chance to get to know other parents, teachers and governors, fostering, as it does, relationships between all involved in the education of our children. And by organising activities that reach beyond the regular school day the PTFA is instrumental in developing a sense of ‘community’ around the school.

Who are the PTFA?

You are! Every parent is automatically a member of the PTFA. As you are aware, with the Covid restrictions, we are not able to organise and run the usual events that are popular, therefore, are looking at other ways to raise much needed funds. If you are interested in being involved, please contact ...

For more information and how to sign up to volunteer please visit their page on the Brookfield Website: http://www.brookfield.sutton.sch.uk/701/ptfa

PRESTO PERFORMING ARTS

Presto Performing Arts are a local, independent Performing Arts school with classes running at Brookfield Primary on Friday evenings for children aged 4-16. Presto pride themselves on being one of the most affordable schools, with a team of industry professionals, many of whom are West End performers. They offer a free trial class, and don’t ‘tie you in’ to a contract or payment plan at any point.

What makes Presto slightly different to other schools is that they work towards an end of term performance every single term at Presto, giving students the opportunity to develop their confidence on a regular basis. They also perform a large-scale show in a local theatre every 2 years so the students can experience performing professionally.

They offer extra opportunities such as dance competitions, LAMDA accredited exams, annual performances at the Sutton light switch-on, 1:1 private singing lessons and the opportunity to perform in Disneyland Paris.

Get in touch to book a free trial class.

We always welcome parents in school helping in classes and we are pleased to let you know that we can continue to do this this term. We know how much our children benefit from this additional support, especially at the moment when so much time in school has been missed.
