NORTH CHEAM HUB READING CHALLENGE

*REMINDER* We were now halfway through this challenge! So far, both Moonstone Class (Yr 5) and Jade Class (Yr 1) have read over 100 books in each class! Our donations total £575 as of 7am 19.11.21!!

We are very excited to be launching a new reading challenge across the North Cheam Hub.

Both Brookfield and Cheam Park Farm would like to revamp and develop their classroom book corners with up to date and vibrant books to encourage the children's love of reading.

We have been set the challenge of reading 5,000 books across both schools before the end of November 2021.

Please encourage your children to read as many books as possible.

We would be really grateful if you could donate to this wonderful cause. Please click on this link: North Cheam Hub Reading Challenge.

Please share with your friends and families.

RUDOLPH RUN - FRIDAY 3RD DECEMBER

Brookfield Primary is very excited to be joining in with many others around the UK to participate in a ‘Rudolph Run’ again this year.

The children and staff really enjoyed this event last year, raising a large sum of money for a local charity that means a lot to many of us in our Brookfield community.

A ‘Rudolph Run’ is a sponsored walk or run which will be completed during the school day. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate the festive season whilst raising vital funds for St Raphael’s – your local hospice.

On Friday 3rd December the children will get to be reindeer! Children can come to school in festive outfits* (e.g. Christmas tops, dresses, jumpers, something sparkly, tinsel etc - no school uniform required). They will be provided with a red nose and antlers for a suggested £1 donation. If family and friends would like to sponsor your child, there is a just giving page in which they can donate - a little goes a long way!

*if they have PE or Forest School please dress appropriately

Please find the JustGiving Page below:

https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/leo-academy-trust-bf-rr2

Where does your money go?

The money raised will help St Raphael’s to provide exceptional end of life care to almost 1,000 patients and their families every year who live in Merton & Sutton. 75% of their running costs rely on the incredible support and generosity of the community. During this difficult time for all of us, they need you now more than ever!

As we are a Rights Respecting school, part of which involves looking at Global citizenship and supporting our community, the children will learn about supporting others in their local area.

We really appreciate your support and hope that you’ll have fun helping us raise money for St Raphael’s Hospice.

WORLD DIABETES DAY

Jessica and her friends from Amethyst Class in Year 4 held a mini class assembly, informing the children about World Diabetes Day, this year held on 14th November. They shared some facts and information about Diabetes and explained why it is important that we all have an understanding of how to support a diabetic friend or family member. Thank you for spreading awareness, Jessica!

EARLY YEARS

In Early Years this week we have been enjoying Nursery Rhyme Week! We loved watching you perform the different songs and rhymes. Which one is your favourite?

Last week in Reception we had so much fun with Gruffalo story. We were very creative and made Gruffalos and acted out the story. What animals can you remember from the story? We created a small woodland and made a route for the BeeBot to fly around. How did we make it move? What a fun week!

YEAR 1

Children in Year 1 have had a busy couple of weeks! This week we started our new story in Literacy, 'Handa's Surprise'. We have had great fun acting out the story in preparation for writing our own versions next week. As part of our RE topic exploring Judaism, the children made menorahs and added a sentence to explain something they are grateful for. In maths, we have been having fun with ordinal numbers - giving positions for things in a queue or winning a race! Chloe has also been busy out of school... our entrepreneur was selling her wares at her family's stall in Portobello Road.Chloe is the 4th generation of market sellers! She had a wonderful day and was so good with her customers, dealing with money and adding up. Well done Chloe!

YEAR 2

Year 2 have had a great week this week! They have been trying extremely hard - even when the work has become challenging. Year 2 really enjoyed their computing lesson this week. They were exploring the process of digital footprints. We also had a discussion regarding what data we can share online and the types of information that we should not share. In science, we have been continuing to investigate the properties of materials and what a good use of them would be. This year we have been looking at 'light'. We have discussed what materials would be good to make blinds for a house. Year 2 discussed the meaning of transparency and opaqueness. We have really challenged Year 2 this week in their maths lessons however all of the children have been able to step up to the challenge and have completed some amazing work. We have been looking at renaming with subtraction and the different methods that we could use to solve these question. Well done for another fabulous week of learning - keep it up!

Computing

Computing

Science

Maths

YEAR 3

Year 3 have had an excellent week. In Maths we have started a new chapter: Multiplication and Division. We have been using resources to understand how multiplication works and we have learned to make arrays to help with multiplication. In English, we have learned the features of a non-chronological report and we have written a report about the water cycle. In Science we have continued to investigate how magnets work and we learned that some magnets are more magnetic than others depending on their size. We had a lot of fun in our topic lesson using Google Earth to make a project about the Rivers in the UK. We celebrated anti-bullying week and we discussed how we can stay safe and who we can ask for help when we feel we are being mistreated. We talked about the articles of the week which tell us about how children have the right to be safe and protected from harm.

YEAR 4

Year 4 been very busy this week. We have been using our book, Ice Trap to help us write a diary entry in the role of Percy Blackbarrow, a member of Shackleton's Expedition to Antarctica , who joined the crew by stowing away in a tiny locker onboard Shackleton's ship, Endurance. We thought about what it would be like to be hidden away for three days before being discovered. In Maths, we have been multiplying by 11 and 12 as well as dividing by 6, 7 and 9. We have used pictorials to help us divide as well as using our times table facts to work out an inverse division facts. In Science, we have been focusing on changes of matter when applying heat to chocolate and discovering if the temperature of the water affects the rate of change. In RE, we have explored how Jewish people follow God at home and the rules they follow to show a commitment to God. In Topic, we have explored the physical features of Antarctica and its location on a globe.

YEAR 5

Year 5 have had a lot of fun the past two weeks. A particular highlight was our trip to The Royal Festival at the South bank Centre. The children got to experience Orchestra Unwrapped ; there was lots of clapping, stamping and clapping rhythms. The children were exceptional and so well behaved at the venue and on public transport. The rest of our learning this week involved understanding short division in maths and growing our confidence in solving more tricky questions. We have continued reading our text 'The London Eye Mystery' and have now got to the part of the missing cousin- where is Salim? Will the children put their detective skills to use to solve the mystery? This week the children wrote formal letters to the detective over the case, they presented their theories of where he may have disappeared to. We have also been celebrating Anti Bullying Week. The children discussed the meaning of banter and debated when it turn s to bullying. We also completed self portraits and the class used kind and positive adjectives to describe each other.

YEAR 6

Year 6 have had a brilliant few weeks. In English, we finished reading our class text 'Holes'. We then created a book review discussing the main parts of the text to encourage others to read the book without spoiling the ending. In maths, we have continued our topic of fractions. We have revised a range of methods we have used in fractions for things such as simplifying, adding and subtracting. We have also learnt how to divide fractions using the 'keep, flip, change' method. In Science, we explored the importance of healthy living and the affect smoking has had over time. We utilised this information and used our scientific knowledge to create a line graph based on different health habits. After creating our graphs, we drew our own conclusions based on a range of factors and the results of the graph. In topic, we were able to fully immerse ourselves into our new topic 'Hola Mexico!. We learnt a popular Mexican hat dance and created our own 'aguas frescas' drinks.

COUNT ON US MATHS CLUB

Years 4 and 5 children had a lot of fun in the Count On Us Maths club this week. We began by practising our mental maths skills with the 24Game, trying to make 24 using any of the 4 operations. They were so quick to find different ways to make 24! After that, they got into teams and worked really hard to make the figure of a swan using tangrams. They competed against each other to solve the puzzles in the fastest time.

ABSENCE

What to do if my child is absent?

Please can we remind all parents/carers that if your child is going to be absent from school that you use the Brookfield Absence Form (instead of leaving a message on the answerphone).

We know that illness is unavoidable and to be expected, especially at the moment due to Covid-19. Knowing whether pupils are going to be absent from school and the reasons for any absences is an important safeguarding issue for the school.

It is therefore, vitally important that if your child is not going to be in school that you complete our the form by 9:15am.

The form has 3 separate sections for Coronavirus Related / General Illness / Other Reason for Absence (ie. appointments).

The form can also be found on the Weekly Newsletters and Brookfield Website home page under Parents - Absence and Attendance:

http://www.brookfield.sutton.sch.uk/875/absence-and-attendance

Please note that you ONLY need to complete the form if your child is off school you do not need to call and leave a message.

If for any reason you are unable to access the form then please either call the school and leave a message on the school absence line on 020 8644 8616 opt 1 (you do not need to speak to a member of the office staff) or email the office on: bfoffice@leoacademytrust.co.uk.

Please note that if your child is unwell for 5 or more days (unrelated to Covid-19), medical evidence may be requested.

HOUSE TEAMS

The children love earning house points and are always very excited to add their tokens to the overall total. Each week, the house points will be counted up and this will be shared with the children during achievement assemblies.

At the end of each half term, the winning house will be awarded with a ‘Mufti Day’ just for them. The dates for each ‘Winning House Mufti’ are below.

SCHOOL LUNCHES

School Meals

PLEASE NOTE: Price increase from September 2021 - £2.35 a day.

Our school catering provision is offered to all children across the Trust by LEO Catering, our in house catering supplier. The menus are created and refreshed three times a year, catering for children with allergies and are available to view below. Our menus follow government food standard guidelines and offer excellent value at £2.35 a day for a main meal, dessert, choice of salad bar, fresh bread daily and vegetarian and Halal options. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive a free meal funded by the government's Universal Infant Free School Meal grant and we encourage anyone in any year group who thinks they may be eligible to apply for free school meal funding to apply.

Menus are available here www.leoacademytrust.co.uk/647/school-meals or from the office foyer.

Children in Years 3-6 will need to pay for their meals via Arbor. Cost of a school meal is £2.35 per day, £11.75 per week. Please ensure there are sufficient funds in your child's account in advance, otherwise no school dinner can be ordered and you will need to provide your child with a packed lunch.

For those children who do still bring in a packed lunch, you may have noticed that your child brings home some of their lunch as we encourage the children to take home uneaten food. This enables you to see exactly what your child is eating at lunchtimes and adapt their lunch accordingly. We ask that packed lunches include healthy options in line with our Healthy School status. Children should not bring fizzy drinks or chocolate bars to school.

We have a number of children with nut allergies in school which means that all staff and parents must be vigilant about ingredients we use in school and items put into lunch boxes. No nuts should be put into packed lunches.

REMINDERS

Contacting your child's class teacher: If you need to contact your child's class teacher please email the school office on bfoffice@leoacademytrust.co.uk and they will forward the emails during the working day for the teacher or Senior Leader to act upon and respond.

  • Please do not to approach the class teachers in the mornings during drop off time unless it is urgent.

  • Please make an appointment to see the class teacher via the school office.

  • KS2 pupils do not finish their school day/ learning till 3:20pm, therefore, if you are waiting on the playground to collect your child at the end of the day, please ensure that you stand away from the classroom windows and door so as not to disturb their learning.

  • The climbing frames are not to be used before and after school, parents please remind your children of this school rule. In addition, children are not to use their scooters or bikes on school grounds and must walk to the side of them.

  • If using private vehicles, please remember to park thoughtfully and not park in front of the local residents’ drives or on the yellow zig zag lines in front of the school. We would like to see as many families and staff as possible walking, cycling or scooting to school.

  • If your child suffers from asthma they must have an in-date, spare inhaler in school at all times along with a spacer. These should be given to the office who will store them securely. Please check on a yearly basis that the inhaler is still fit for purpose. Please also ensure any child with an allergy has appropriate medication in school, i.e Epipen/Piriton etc. This could be life-saving.

  • We ask that pupils bring in their own water bottles daily. The bottles need to be clearly labelled with the child's name and only have water in them.

  • Please leave buggies and prams outside the school buildings, as it could be very hazardous in an emergency. Currently, the office is operating on a 'one in and one out' policy. Please ensure you wear a mask if you enter the school building.

  • Please remember that all children in KS2 are encouraged to bring fresh fruit or vegetables to school for a mid-morning snack during playtime. Many children are really hungry by lunchtime and will be happier and learn better if they have eaten something at playtime.

  • Only children in Year 6 are permitted to bring a mobile phone into school and only if absolutely necessary. Phones are stored in the office during the school day.

  • No pets in the playground please especially dogs! (Excluding guide dogs). This includes owners carrying their dog in their arms. We cannot permit any pets on the premises.

  • Please do not let your children climb on the climbing frames in the KS1 or KS2 playground.

  • No smoking is allowed anywhere in the school or grounds.

  • I would like to urge parents to remember to park thoughtfully and not park in front of the local residents’ drives or on the yellow zig zag lines in front of the school. We would like to see as many families and staff as possible walking, cycling or scooting to school.

  • Please ensure that you look at your Arbor account as we are a paperless school and all information is sent via this portal. If you have any queries, please contact the school office.
