Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome to our final Newsletter for 2021! What a year it has been!
We have many exciting things happening in our final week for this term, please take a look below to see what we have been up to.
Also- please have another look at the 'Dates for your Diary' section.
A reminder about switching off your engines whilst you are waiting to collect your children please. We have many children and adults who suffer from asthma and this is also contributing negatively to our environment. Therefore, switch off your engines whilst you wait. On this note regarding cars, please can you ensure that you do not park on the double yellow lines near school and it should go without saying, please always show respect to our lovely lollipop lady, Maria!
Many thanks,
Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you all,
From The Senior Leadership Team
To help prevent the spread of Covid at Brookfield Primary Academy, please can we ask adults to take regular rapid tests, we now advise that you increase the twice weekly tests to three times a week -Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (children are not required to take regular tests).
1 in 3 people with Coronavirus do not show symptoms.
Testing kits are available
through your employer if they offer testing to employees
by collecting a home test kit from a test site
by ordering a home test kit online

A negative result means the test did not find signs of coronavirus. But this does not guarantee you do not have coronavirus, so you should keep following all coronavirus advice including:
regular handwashing
social distancing
wearing a face covering where recommended
In January 2022 our existing breakfast and afterschool clubs which are currently run by Jancett will stop and Brookfield Primary Academy will begin running our own wrap-around care clubs.
This is an exciting new venture for the school and we are drawing on all the expertise of the existing staff in the current clubs and from the various wrap around care provisions across the schools in the LEO Trust to develop and offer an excellent wrap around care provision.
The Sunrisers - Breakfast Club will run from 7:30am until 8.45am when the children will be taken to class by a member of staff. The daily session cost for this will be £5.50.
The Sunsetters - After school club will run from 3.10pm until 6.00pm, the children will be collected from class and taken to the club by a member of staff. The daily session cost for this will be £13.00.

Wow! What an exciting week it has been in Early Years! We made Christmas cards and posted them home. We had the help of Paul the postman who collected them for us!
We also enjoyed a 'Polar Express Day' where the children came dressed in the pyjamas and took part in lots of snowy themed activities! We loved decorating Santa's beard and experimenting with the melted snowman (cornflour!).
In Nursery, the children were needed to explore the Forest School. Santa had dropped his presents from his sleigh! The children were amazing at finding all the presents! What an exciting adventure!
Last Friday was a jam-packed day wearing our Christmas jumpers and coming to the end of well being week. It was also human rights day and we had a special assembly to find out more about the rights we have as human beings. We created a poster to show our rights. Our final challenge of the term has been sewing felt Christmas trees - the children did a fantastic job and we're sure their decorations will be treasured for years to come! What a fantastic way to end the term with our Christmas singing concerts. The children did themselves proud learning all the songs and actions to entertain you - we hope you were as proud of them as we were!
Year 2 have had a great final few weeks leading up to the end of term. We have been focusing a lot on well being recently and we had a dedicated day to well being. This included a lot of mindfulness activities, yoga and watching a film with our friends from across both classes. It was really nice to take time out from all the hard work that we've done to focus on our well being. We have also come to the end of our Victorians topic. To end with a bang, we had a fun Victorian Day focused around Victorian School life and a Victorian Christmas. It was lovely to see all the children in their incredible Victorian outfits! We were also lucky to have a lady in to deliver a Victorian School workshop for us. We have all discovered how lucky we are to have a much more fun school life than the Victorian Era.

Year 3 have had another exciting week of learning. In Maths we are learning to multiply 2-digit numbers using different resources to understand how multiplication works. For our exit lesson in topic we have created a volcano/mountain/river scene using different materials. In English we have learned about Mary Anning and we have written a biography about her amazing life discovering fossils. In Financial Education, we learned how we can budget and save money to buy things we want. Last Friday we celebrated Well-being week and we had lots of interesting activities that focused on ourselves and our well-being. We also celebrated Human Rights Day and learned more about the what our rights are as children and as individuals. We then created a poster to show we care about ourselves and the people around us. Year 3 gave the most amazing performance on Wednesday 8th and they showed us what they had learned during their drumming lessons. What a treat! From everyone in Year 3... have a lovely Christmas and our best wishes for 2022.
It has been a very exciting term in Year 4 and we have learnt so much. In the last two weeks, we have been very busy. We all greatly enjoyed our visit to Bough Beeches Reservoir and Water Treatment Centre. We expanded our knowledge of the water cycle through tours of the plant, interesting, practical activities and interactive discussions. Thank you to the parents who came with us and helped made the day go so well. We have been expanding our knowledge of multiplication and division and can divide two and three digit numbers by a single digit number using formal methods. In English, we have written descriptive passages from our book Ice Trap describing the terrible journey Shackleton and his crew had in Antarctica. We have also created woven paper baubles and written instructions for making the bauble. We have thought about the most important part of the Christmas story today and discovered what each part of a Christingle represents. We have created amazing Christmas Cards and explored borrowing and lending in Financial Education.
What a term we have had in year 5! We have squeezed so much learning in since September and these past two weeks have been no exception. From learning about Captain Cook in Topic to the Phases of the Moon in Science, Reading timetables in Maths to writing newspaper reports in English, we have had a very busy but exciting time. We were also fortunate to have a Well Being Day where we focused on ourselves, we relaxed and felt energised after some yoga, meditation, drawing, biscuit decorating (yum!) and even a talent show in the afternoon. We celebrated Human Rights Day by looking by watching a video highlighting how some children around the world are not as fortunate as us and might not experience the same education or social conditions that we do. We ended the term with a celebration of singing, making Christmas cards and being joyous in each other's company.
What a great end to the term. In English, children were tasked with writing a diary entry in the role of the little boy from the McDonalds advert. It was really nice to see many different interpretations of how the boy was feeling through the children's work. They are working really hard to ensure they are including the writing checklist throughout their pieces of work and should be commended for their efforts. We also fantastic light day. The children learnt all about: how light travels, how light is reflected, the term refraction, colour spectrums and how shadows are formed from opaque objects. We ended the term by making Christmas cards, playing games and enjoying our time together.
I'd like to thank all of you who came along to hear the exciting new changes happening with our reading and phonics.
If you missed the presentations, the YR slides can be accessed HERE and the Y1 & Y2 slides can be accessed HERE.
If you would like any further information or have any questions please contact me and I'll be happy to help!
Thank you, Mrs. Holmes, Reading and Phonics Lead.
Thanks to the 'Count on us' scheme, last week we received new books for our KS2 classrooms and the library.
Our mission to promote the love of reading and to update the books we have in the school is ongoing!
The children have been working hard on their Doodle maths and times tables both at home and at school which is great!
This week's top class Doodlers are:
Opal followed by Amber and Jade
Leah in Sapphire achieved her 100-Day Streak. Congratulations!
Here are the results of our weekly battles between year group classes. Keep practising so you can beat the other class.
Brookfield's top scorers on TTRockstars this week are:
Max (Opal), Mason (Topaz), Alex (Moonstone) and Marcus (Sapphire)
Highest scoring class at Brookfield this week is: Topaz with 2011 points.
Our fabulous mathematicians have had another chance to practise their mental maths skills to quickly find 24 in the popular 24Game. There are so many different ways to solve each game and these children are really quick to identify them. For our last session this year, we used pentominoes to create different shapes like rectangles and squares. Not as easy as it seems!
Our Count On Us Maths club will resume on January 12th, so if you are in Y4/5 you can join us every Wednesday at lunchtime.
This week has been a very busy week for sports at Brookfield where we have taken part in a wide range of different events and festivals.
Our Sports Media team have written reports from two events which we took part in last week:
"Last Wednesday, the girls football team attended the Danone Nations Cup Competition. There were 11 schools in the competition in 4 separate groups. Our team was split into two teams where we played against different teams. We have gained some great experiences from taking part in this competition and we played in some very challenging games. Lottie scored her first goal for the girls team which was great and our only goal in the competition. We had a great morning together and were able to develop some skills such as our communication and teamwork, We were also able to have lots of fun."
Written by Zakya, Evie-Rose and Aarav.
"Last Wednesday, some of the Y6 boys football team took part in a football competition at Crystal Palace Training Ground. Their first match was against Cheam Common, almost winning 1-0 after Austin’s goal in the 5th minute of the match. However, Cheam Common equalised in the last minute of the game, making the result 1-1. The second game was against Highview. It was 0-0 for most of the game until Alfie scored in the final minute, the match ended 1-0 to us. The third game was against Oasis Ryelands and the final score was 3-0 to us. Leyton scored the first goal and shortly after Alfie scored and doubled our lead. Jake rounded off the scoring with the third and final goal moments before the final whistle blew. The fourth match was against St Mary’s Sutton and sadly, we lost 2-0. We came 3rd in our group and missed out on going to the quarter finals. Overall we had a great day and were even lucky enough to meet the Crystal Palace u23’s Goalkeeper and defender."

Please see the flyer for more information sent about Squid Game from Netflix.
At Brookfield we are working towards our Rights Respecting Schools silver award and children are learning about the rights of the child.
On Friday 10th December we celebrated Human Rights Day. Children’s rights are human rights so we can celebrate them alongside the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Children watched an assembly to learn more about this important day and they created posters to show what it means to them.
For more information about the rights of the child click here.

Please can we remind all parents/carers that if your child is going to be absent from school that you use the Brookfield Absence Form (instead of leaving a message on the answerphone).
We know that illness is unavoidable and to be expected, especially at the moment due to Covid-19. Knowing whether pupils are going to be absent from school and the reasons for any absences is an important safeguarding issue for the school.
It is therefore, vitally important that if your child is not going to be in school that you complete our the form by 9:15am.
The form has 3 separate sections for Coronavirus Related / General Illness / Other Reason for Absence (ie. appointments).
The form can also be found on the Weekly Newsletters and Brookfield Website home page under Parents - Absence and Attendance:
http://www.brookfield.sutton.sch.uk/875/absence-and-attendance
Please note that you ONLY need to complete the form if your child is off school you do not need to call and leave a message.
If for any reason you are unable to access the form then please either call the school and leave a message on the school absence line on 020 8644 8616 opt 1 (you do not need to speak to a member of the office staff) or email the office on: bfoffice@leoacademytrust.co.uk.
Please note that if your child is unwell for 5 or more days (unrelated to Covid-19), medical evidence may be requested.
At Brookfield Primary school, we use a house point reward system to recognise the positive behaviour of our pupils. The children love earning house points and are always very excited to add their tokens to the overall total. Each week, the house points will be counted up and this will be shared with the children during achievement assemblies.
At the end of each half term, the winning house will be awarded with a ‘Mufti Day’ just for them. The dates for each ‘Winning House Mufti’ are below.

Our school catering provision is offered to all children across the Trust by LEO Catering, our in house catering supplier. The menus are created and refreshed three times a year, catering for children with allergies and are available to view below. Our menus follow government food standard guidelines and offer excellent value at £2.35 a day for a main meal, dessert, choice of salad bar, fresh bread daily and vegetarian and Halal options. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive a free meal funded by the government's Universal Infant Free School Meal grant and we encourage anyone in any year group who thinks they may be eligible to apply for free school meal funding to apply.
Menus are available here www.leoacademytrust.co.uk/647/school-meals or from the office foyer.
Children in Years 3-6 will need to pay for their meals via Arbor. Cost of a school meal is £2.35 per day, £11.75 per week. Please ensure there are sufficient funds in your child's account in advance, otherwise no school dinner can be ordered and you will need to provide your child with a packed lunch.
For those children who do still bring in a packed lunch, you may have noticed that your child brings home some of their lunch as we encourage the children to take home uneaten food. This enables you to see exactly what your child is eating at lunchtimes and adapt their lunch accordingly. We ask that packed lunches include healthy options in line with our Healthy School status. Children should not bring fizzy drinks or chocolate bars to school.
We have a number of children with nut allergies in school which means that all staff and parents must be vigilant about ingredients we use in school and items put into lunch boxes. No nuts should be put into packed lunches.
Please do not to approach the class teachers in the mornings during drop off time unless it is urgent.
Please make an appointment to see the class teacher via the school office.
KS2 pupils do not finish their school day/ learning till 3:20pm, therefore, if you are waiting on the playground to collect your child at the end of the day, please ensure that you stand away from the classroom windows and door so as not to disturb their learning.
The climbing frames are not to be used before and after school, parents please remind your children of this school rule. In addition, children are not to use their scooters or bikes on school grounds and must walk to the side of them.
If using private vehicles, please remember to park thoughtfully and not park in front of the local residents’ drives or on the yellow zig zag lines in front of the school. We would like to see as many families and staff as possible walking, cycling or scooting to school.
If your child suffers from asthma they must have an in-date, spare inhaler in school at all times along with a spacer. These should be given to the office who will store them securely. Please check on a yearly basis that the inhaler is still fit for purpose. Please also ensure any child with an allergy has appropriate medication in school, i.e Epipen/Piriton etc. This could be life-saving.
We ask that pupils bring in their own water bottles daily. The bottles need to be clearly labelled with the child's name and only have water in them.
Please leave buggies and prams outside the school buildings, as it could be very hazardous in an emergency. Currently, the office is operating on a 'one in and one out' policy. Please ensure you wear a mask if you enter the school building.
Please remember that all children in KS2 are encouraged to bring fresh fruit or vegetables to school for a mid-morning snack during playtime. Many children are really hungry by lunchtime and will be happier and learn better if they have eaten something at playtime.
Only children in Year 6 are permitted to bring a mobile phone into school and only if absolutely necessary. Phones are stored in the office during the school day.
No pets in the playground please especially dogs! (Excluding guide dogs). This includes owners carrying their dog in their arms. We cannot permit any pets on the premises.
Please do not let your children climb on the climbing frames in the KS1 or KS2 playground.
No smoking is allowed anywhere in the school or grounds.
I would like to urge parents to remember to park thoughtfully and not park in front of the local residents’ drives or on the yellow zig zag lines in front of the school. We would like to see as many families and staff as possible walking, cycling or scooting to school.
Please ensure that you look at your Arbor account as we are a paperless school and all information is sent via this portal. If you have any queries, please contact the school office.
We always welcome parents in school helping in classes and we are pleased to let you know that we can continue to do this this term. We know how much our children benefit from this additional support, especially at the moment when so much time in school has been missed.
Please complete this form if you are interested in helping in school.
All PTFA helpers and volunteers in class are required to complete Safeguarding training and provide a current DBS certificate. Contact the office on either school site for advice on this.
