10 things: Common problems with Do Now Activities
A high proportion of the lessons I watch from the beginning begin with a Do Now or lesson starter. Most often the instructions or questions are on the whiteboard and students are expected to get going with the task on arrival while the teacher takes a register and settles the class. Quite often this is a ‘silent Do Now’ – so students are meant to work in silence for that calming effect after a lesson transition and to create a period of intense focus.

Literacy strategies: taking a fresh look

Reading features on three-quarters of school Pupil Premium strategies, with writing and spoken language on nearly 50%. This is hardly a surprise, given how important literacy skills are to the academic and life outcomes for pupils. Schools rightly, and regularly, invest significant time and money into supporting children in these key areas. But the persistent presence of literacy on Pupil Premium strategies and other school planning documents perhaps also speaks towards a tendency to move onto the next aspect of literacy without securing the former.

Our half termly Reading Leader Network will provide an opportunity to meet other reading leaders working across the 16 London Boroughs supported by the Wandle English Hub.
Each session will focus on a different topic. There will be input from facilitators, updates from the latest research and guidance as well as opportunities for discussion, the sharing of expertise & best practice and networking.
