What makes for effective Professional Development?

Evidence suggests that quality professional development has a greater impact on pupil attainment than other interventions that schools may choose to consider.


It is extremely encouraging therefore to see that professional development has been woven into the frameworks of many of the new initiatives and reforms, such as the Early Career Framework (ECF) and the new National Professional Qualifications (NPQs), thus recognising the crucial role that it plays in improving classroom practice and pupil outcomes.

Billy’s reading attainment is falling his comprehension activities are half-finished and his responses lack depth and accuracy.


Billy is a daily reader and receives thrice-weekly interventions to support his progress.


His teacher, an experienced Year 6 teacher and phase leader, doesn’t know what to try next, so brings his stalling progress up for discussion in the staffroom.


I ask, ​“What do you think the problem is?”


The teacher replies, in a flash: ​“Inference.”


We all pause, reflecting. What do we do, then?


His teacher goes on, thinking out loud...

A fantastic addition to any primary teacher who teaches or leads on PE or any secondary PE lead's portfolio of CPD. Accredited by Sports Leaders UK and The Association for Physical Education, equivalent to Year 1 of a Bachelors Degree.

Brick-by-Brick® Facilitator Training is for anyone who would like to facilitate a Brick Club in their school (Suitable for SENCOs, HLTAs, or any other staff interested) It could be for children who are neurodivergent and struggle in social situations or those who may display behavioural difficulties. The focus in a Brick Club is always 'Learning Through Play' using Lego® bricks as the vehicle.

Staff must complete the online Initiate training (takes approx 6-8 hours in own time) before doing the Facilitators Face-to-face course. This covers a lot of the theory and is a really high quality CPD.

The Facilitator Training is a practical, hands-on, experiential day which is a necessary addition to the Initiate training.

Mental Health First Aiders have:

  • An understanding of young people's mental health and factors that affect wellbeing

  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues

  • Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support

  • Ability to support a young person with a long-term mental health issue or disability to thrive

  • Tools to look after their own mental wellbeing
