Technology for learning: A Trust's experience
Digital transformation is only growing faster and the same must be applied to our education sector. That's why we're hosting a mini series with the LEO Academy Trust to explore their model of learning, excellence and opportunity. That has led them to successfully embed technology across all their Academies.
First up is members of their Digital Learning Team, Graham Macaulay and Cheryl Shirley. Our host Patrick McGrath, delves into their experience of using technology for learning, including what they look for in EdTech tools and what advice they have for fellow MATs and schools.

Using tech for independent learning
Take a look at the latest edition of @HeadTeacherHQ, as Mrs C Shirely shares how we use devices at LEO Academy Trust to give pupils a choice, & a voice, in how they learn in school.
Assistive technology has, fundamentally, been designed to help people with specific needs in some way. Over the last few decades, society has recognised its benefits and it has become highly regarded as a tool for use in SEND learning within schools. But, as months of COVID-enforced remote learning and home-schooling have shown, there’s significant potential for the technology to help with literacy, speech, and writing.

EEF blog: Reading Fluency Practice in the Primary Classroom
Rob Laight explains how to develop reading fluency practice using the gradual release of responsibility model.
Reading fluency is often described as a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Some pupils may be able to cross the bridge independently if they regularly read varied and appropriately challenging texts. However, this crossing is a difficult journey for those who don’t.
Strategies such as Reader’s Theatre mirror the ‘gradual release of responsibility’ model that is exemplified in EEF ‘Metacognition and Self-regulated Learning’ guidance report, helping struggling readers to reach independence in a supportive, intentional way:

What Do Mentors Get Out Of Mentoring?
Mentoring trainee teachers is not only a challenge, but it is a true privilege. In this article, Emma Cate Stokes explains just why that is.
The very nature of our job requires us to develop others. It is the bread and butter of teaching. We teach and develop young people on a daily basis. Alongside this, we develop ourselves from weekly staff meetings, courses, edubooks, conferences, teachmeets, NPQs and of course good old-fashioned Twitter debates.
Something that often gets overlooked when thinking about developing ourselves professionally is mentoring a trainee teacher. Typically, we think of the trainee’s development. Of course this is integral and should be the key priority, however, we do not always factor in the huge benefits mentoring can have on our own practice.

What is 'good' behaviour and how can teachers encourage it?
Anyone who has been responsible for teaching a group of children (or even a group of adults!) can quickly recognise the importance of encouraging good behaviour. Many teachers can relay instances of poor behaviour derailing a lesson sequence or learning objective.
“Good behaviour ” is often used in colloquial speech without a clear definition. Sometimes people fall back on the maxim: “It’ s hard to define, but I know it when I see it.”
Instead, this eBook offers a definition for good behaviour and what it entails, as well a strategy that any teacher can consider to encourage good behaviour in their students.

Ask yourself: what is the purpose of assessment in the classroom?
You’re halfway through the school year, with a wealth of data at your fingertips. Now, how can you ensure that assessment in the classroom has purpose and will help your learners progress?
Think about the assessment data you’ve gathered up to this point. Your formative assessment includes daily questioning, observations of the children’s learning, marking of journals and workbooks and talking directly to each learner. While your summative data comes from end-of-chapter reviews and the wider-scoped assessment booklets.
