CPD Spotlight

LEO & SET Year 1 ECT Maths Training

ECTs from across @LEOacademies & @SuttonEdTrust enjoyed their second in person subject specific training session of the term. They started their training session by visiting EYFS, KS1 & KS2 classrooms to see maths teaching & learning in action. On their learning walks, ECTs focused on the following questions:

  • What use of CPA can you see?

  • What is the purpose of the concrete resources?

  • How does it support children's learning?

ECTs then worked with Miss Smith from @BeddingtonInf. Our wonderful ECTs enjoyed:

  • Identifying essential concepts, knowledge & skills in maths

  • Reflecting on their own experiences of teaching maths

  • Sharing ideas & effective practice

The next part of the training included exploring what it means to be fluent with @NatashaDolling. This was a great opportunity to:

  • Explore different definitions of fluency

  • Identify what fluency facts are needed for each Key Stage

  • Explore different activities to help embed fluency

Curriculum Network Learning Community Meetings

Subject leaders from across the Trust met together online for the first Network Learning Community (NLC) meeting of the academic year. During the meetings, all subject leaders focused on exploring the content of the Ofsted Subject Research Reviews and considered the areas of strength and areas for development in their own school. All groups then discussed what adaptive teaching looks like in that subject areas and the plans for this moving forward.

These meetings were a brilliant opportunity to listen to, share with & learn from other colleagues. Thank you to all those who attended these sessions and to all of the NLC meeting leads for your wonderful facilitation.

Disciplinary literacy – what it is and how to teach it in primary

By Shareen Wilkinson

Over the past few years, I have heard several discussions of and references to disciplinary literacy in secondary schools, but what is it, exactly, and how can we embed it in primary schools?

Professor Timothy Shanahan (University of Illinois at Chicago) defines it as ‘the specialised ways reading, writing, and oral language are used in academic disciplines such as science, history, or literature’ (‘Disciplinary literacy in the primary classroom,’ 2019).

Disciplinary literacy goes beyond producing a diary from the point of view of an historical character, and focuses on what writing might look like in a particular subject.

10 Creative Ways to Teach Vocabulary

By Alex Quigley

Developing vocabulary knowledge is so much more than word lists and student-friendly definitions. Even the most careful curation of vocabulary on a knowledge organiser may only give the illusion of knowledge. Pupils may be familiar with new words, but they cannot use them confidently in their writing or talk.

It is crucial that we help pupils develop a curiosity about words and make rich connections between them, their families, synonyms and antonyms. The need to make countless creative connections. They need to know words, but most crucially use them by weaving them into their writing.

EEF blog: Through the Keyhole of the Reading House. Part 1: Vocabulary, Comprehension and Word Reading

By EEF

My Year 5 class are beginning The Nowhere Emporium by Ross McKenzie. In our first lesson, we’ll explore how the author builds a mysterious opening to the story.

I reread the second sentence in the book:

‘Word travelled quickly around the village, and by midday the place was abuzz with rumour and hearsay.’

Hang on: I’ll need to teach some vocabulary here. I scan the rest of the passage for potential ‘Tier 2’ words that appear frequently across several topics in the classroom: ironmonger’s, emporium, jostled, theories, intricate, spectacle.

“Mic check – can someone please sort the feedback?”

By Amarbeer Singh Gill

I’ve come across various feedback policies during my time as a teacher and teacher educator.

I’ve noticed there were a number of important features of these policies, but one thing often missing was an answer to the questions of, “what does ‘good’ feedback look like? How do I come up with it?”

And I think the answer lies in understanding the origins of the term.

The term ‘feedback’ appears to have its origins in engineering. A critical idea here though is that feedback was not particularly useful in and of itself, but it was a key component of a feedback loop...
