Battle of the Books

Please click the links below to see the book lists for each year group.

Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6

Each week we put a brief synopsis of one of our Battle of the Books in the newsletter from a year group’s book list.

This week's book is Carrie’s War - Nina Bawden and is from the Year 6 book list.

It is wartime and Carrie and her little brother Nick have been evacuated from their London home to the Welsh hills. In an unfamiliar place, among strangers, the children feel alone and find little comfort with the family they are billeted with: Mr Evans, a bullying shopkeeper and Auntie Lou, his kind but timid sister.

When Carrie and Nick visit Albert, another evacuee, they are welcomed into Hepzibah Green's warm kitchen. Hepzibah is rumoured to be a witch, but her cooking is delicious, her stories are enthralling and the children cannot keep away. With Albert, Hepzibah and Mister Johnny, they begin to settle into their new surroundings. But before long, their loyalties are tested: will they be persuaded to betray their new friends?

The children need to remember to fill in a book review once they have read a book!

Supporting your child with GSuite

With the changing year more than ever we are seeing the importance of connection between educators and families. We recognise that the dive into supporting your children during Distance Learning was a challenge and we want to support you to support your child’s learning and well-being. We want to support you in understanding the technology that your child is using in the classroom which is critical to supporting children learning at home or school.

This session will allow you to see the technologies your child is using in the classroom. The session will hope to break down the technologies used to make learning at home easier and focused on your child’s educational experience.

Support Pack for Families

Sutton charities, Sutton council and health services have come together to explain what support is available for families this November, and throughout winter.

If you order books through Scholastic, your order can earn rewards points for our school. When you place an order with Scholastic for over £10, we will receive 20p for every £1 that you spend. Making the most of this is really simple - just add the books you would like to your shopping basket and when you checkout, you will be asked to enter the name of the school you would like to receive the rewards.

Every year we use the rewards we receive through Scholastic to buy new books for our class book corners, on Battle of the Books and on exciting new class texts! Due to current restrictions we will be unable to hold our annual book fair this year, but we would still be extremely grateful if you could support us online instead.

STAINED GLASS WINDOW BISCUITS

INGREDIENTS

150 g unsalted butter softened

175 g caster sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

175 g plain flour

30 g cocoa powder

0.5 tsp bicarbonate of soda

icing sugar, for dusting

200 g white ready-to-roll icing

50 g green ready-to-roll icing

1 tube red writing icing

METHOD

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas 4. Line 2 baking sheets with baking paper. Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and cream together using an electric handheld whisk. Beat in the vanilla.

  • Sift together the flour, cocoa powder and bicarbonate of soda, then add to the butter and sugar. Mix until crumbly, then, with clean hands, gather the dough and knead until just smooth.

  • Turn out onto a work surface and shape into a 27cm-long sausage shape. Slice into 18 rounds and place, spaced apart, on the baking sheets. Flatten each with your fingertips to a 5cm diameter. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Cool on the baking sheets for 10 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

  • To decorate, dust your work surface with icing sugar and roll out the white icing to a thin sheet. Use an 8cm round cookie cutter to stamp out 9 circles. Cut each one to make two wavy-edged semicircles. Lightly brush with water and stick on to the cookies.

  • Roll out the green icing and cut out 36 leaf shapes. Use the tip of a teaspoon to cut away the edges to resemble holly leaves. Attach two to each cookie with a dab of water. Use the writing icing to dot two berries on each cookie.
