During RE this week, Year 2 created their own wreath to celebrate the start of Advent.
In 1992, the UN announced there should be a day which promotes equality for people with disabilities known as International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD). The aim of the day is to advance disability rights and protect the wellbeing of people with disabilities.
According to the World Health Organisation, around 15% of the world’s population are considered to have some form of disability. But all too often, the needs of people with disabilities are not catered for by the society they live in.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is intended to break down barriers to inclusion and fight for the rights of individuals with disabilities.
This year’s message is that ‘Not all disabilities are visible’, raising awareness and understanding of disabilities that are not immediately apparent. These include mental illness, learning differences, chronic pain and sight or hearing impairments among others encouraging a society of trust and belief that lasts beyond just one day.
Wearing the Hidden Disabilities sunflower lanyard discreetly indicates to people that they need additional support, help or a little more time to complete a task. Since its launch in 2016, the sunflower lanyard has been adopted globally and is recognised in different venues across the UK.
People with disabilities have been particularly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the isolation and diminished services which have happened as a result.
The goal for this year's International Day of Persons with Disabilities is to spread awareness of invisible disabilities as well as the impact that COVID-19 has had on mental health.

Each week we put a brief synopsis of one of our Battle of the Books in the newsletter from a year group’s book list.
This week's book is The Nowhere Emporium - Ross MacKenzie and is from the Year 5 book list.
When the mysterious Nowhere Emporium arrives in Glasgow, orphan Daniel Holmes stumbles upon it quite by accident. Before long, the 'shop from nowhere' -- and its owner, Mr Silver -- draw Daniel into a breathtaking world of magic and enchantment. Recruited as Mr Silver's apprentice, Daniel learns the secrets of the Emporium's vast labyrinth of passageways and rooms -- rooms that contain wonders beyond anything Daniel has ever imagined. But when Mr Silver disappears, and a shadow from the past threatens everything, the Emporium and all its wonders begin to crumble. Can Daniel save his home, and his new friends, before the Nowhere Emporium is destroyed forever? Ross MacKenzie unleashes a riot of imagination, colour and fantasy in this astonishing adventure, perfect for fans of Philip Pullman, Cornelia Funke and Neil Gaiman.
The children need to remember to fill in a book review once they have read a book!
With the changing year more than ever we are seeing the importance of connection between educators and families. We recognise that the dive into supporting your children during Distance Learning was a challenge and we want to support you to support your child’s learning and well-being. We want to support you in understanding the technology that your child is using in the classroom which is critical to supporting children learning at home or school.
This session will allow you to see the technologies your child is using in the classroom. The session will hope to break down the technologies used to make learning at home easier and focused on your child’s educational experience.
Sutton charities, Sutton council and health services have come together to explain what support is available for families this November, and throughout winter.

If you order books through Scholastic, your order can earn rewards points for our school. When you place an order with Scholastic for over £10, we will receive 20p for every £1 that you spend. Making the most of this is really simple - just add the books you would like to your shopping basket and when you checkout, you will be asked to enter the name of the school you would like to receive the rewards.
Every year we use the rewards we receive through Scholastic to buy new books for our class book corners, on Battle of the Books and on exciting new class texts! Due to current restrictions we will be unable to hold our annual book fair this year, but we would still be extremely grateful if you could support us online instead.

INGREDIENTS
Sunflower oil, for greasing
175g plain flour, plus extra
1 tsp ground ginger
zest 1 orange
100g butter, cold, cut into chunks
50g golden caster sugar
1 tbsp. milk
12 fruit-flavoured boiled sweets
Icing sugar, to dust
About 120cm thin ribbon, to decorate
METHOD
Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Grease 2 large non-stick baking sheets with oil. Whizz the flour, ginger, zest and butter with 1⁄2 tsp salt to fine crumbs in a food processor. Pulse in the sugar and milk, then turn out and knead briefly on a floured surface until smooth. Wrap in cling film, then chill for about 30 mins.
Flour the work surface again, then roll out the dough to the thickness of a £1 coin. Use 7cm cutters to cut out shapes, then use 4cm cutters to cut out the middles. Re-roll leftover pieces. Make a hole in the top of each biscuit, then carefully lift onto the baking sheets.
Crush the sweets in their wrappers with a rolling pin, then put the pieces into the middles of the biscuits – the sweets should be level with the top of the dough. Bake for 15-20 mins or until the biscuits are golden brown and the middles have melted.
Leave to harden, then transfer to a rack to cool. Thread with ribbon, then dust with icing sugar. Will keep for a month, but best eaten within 3 days.
