A Word From Ms Williamson
As another school term draws to a close, I am delighted to share some of the many wonderful experiences that have enriched the education of our pupils here at Manor Park Primary. This has been a truly action-packed half-term, filled with exciting opportunities for learning, exploration, and celebration, both within our classrooms and beyond.
We kicked off the term with Parent Evenings, which provide a valuable opportunity for us to connect and discuss your child/ren’s progress. Thank you for your continued partnership in your child/ren’s education.
The magic of reading was well and truly alive during our annual World Book Day. It was fantastic to see the creativity and enthusiasm as children (and staff) came to school dressed as their favourite characters, and our travelling book fair further ignited a love for reading, filling homes with new literary adventures and fun facts.
Our Year 5 pupils embarked on a fascinating journey with the Orchestra Unwrapped trip- no doubt sparking an appreciation for the power and beauty of live music. Back in school, Year 6 faced the challenge of Mock SATs week with resilience and determination, providing valuable experience and highlighting their hard work throughout the year and preparing them for the real event in May.
Our younger learners also enjoyed some memorable adventures. Reception classes had a fantastic time exploring Bockett's Farm, bringing their learning to life with hands-on experiences with animals and the countryside. We also proudly celebrated World Down Syndrome Day and Autism Acceptance Day, fostering an understanding and appreciation for the unique contributions of everyone in our school community.
The joy of sharing learning was evident in our Year 2 and Reception Express and Shares, where children proudly showcased their achievements to their families. Our youngest pupils in Nursery also enjoyed welcoming families into their classrooms for fun-filled Stay and Play sessions.
Developing essential life skills was also a focus, with some of our Year 5 pupils gaining valuable confidence and road safety awareness through their Bikeability training. Year 3 broadened their understanding of different faiths with an insightful visit to a local synagogue, while Year 2 put their geographical skills into practice with a local Fieldwork walk.
The wonders of Science came alive for Year 1 with an immersive experience in the science dome workshop, sparking curiosity and wonder. Following their exciting adventure, Year 3 reflected on their learning during their Go Ape trip follow up, solidifying their understanding of teamwork and resilience.
The term culminated in a truly spectacular Year 4 Musical Extravaganza! The children’s talent and enthusiasm shone brightly as they entertained us with a wonderful array of musical performances.
As we prepare to break for the Easter holidays, I want to thank all our dedicated staff for their hard work and commitment to providing such rich and varied learning experiences for our children. I also extend my sincere gratitude to you, our parents and carers, for your ongoing support.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back for the start of the Summer Term on Tuesday 22nd April 2025, refreshed and ready for more exciting learning opportunities.
Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable Easter break.
The Spring term concluded with the presentation of the 'Spring Reading Champion' awards. Children demonstrated exceptional dedication to reading, exhibiting remarkable effort throughout the term. Their commitment was duly recognised. Each recipient was presented with a certificate and a new book. The pupils' hard work was a testament to their love of literature. We celebrated their achievements with a special assembly. The celebration video, capturing the joyous occasion, is available for viewing via the link (Click Here). We extend our congratulations to all the children who participated.
This half term in nursery, our first topic was 'Puddles and Rainbows'. We began by learning about the different kinds of weather that we can see and singing lots of songs about rain and rainbows. We even made sunny suns, rain clouds and rainbows to decorate our classroom with, and observed and recorded the weather twice a day for a week to see if there were any patterns.
In our main project 'Dangerous Dinosaurs' we have loved reading a range of stories, including 'Dinosaur ROAR!' and 'Cave Baby' by Julia Donaldson. We even explored some non-fiction books to help us learn more about our favourite kinds of dinosaurs. We wrapped up the half term with a lovely Play and Share with our adults, and we enjoyed having them come in to experience all the fun and learning we have to offer!
We have begun Phonics this half term, learning our first sounds; s, a, t, p, i, n. We have been practising our robot arms and breaking up the words to help us sound them out. We also enjoy counting how many sounds we can hear in different words.
In Maths we have been usig songs like 5 Speckled Frogs, 5 Currant Buns, and 5 Little Ducks to help us count forwards and backwards to 5 and we have talked about how we can find one more and one less. We have learned about some 2D shapes like circles, squares, rectangles and triangles, counting how many sides they have and finding objects around our nursery that are those shapes as well as making them using a variety of resources like playdough.
We enjoyed dressing up this term for World book day and reading some of our favourite stories! The Teachers even acted out the Room on the Broom story.
This term, our children embarked on an engaging "Ready Steady Grow!" topic. A memorable trip to Bocketts Farm saw pupils interacting with animals and enjoying a packed lunch, culminating in the thrilling pig race. In class, children developed culinary skills by creating banana milkshake recipes and baking bread. An "Express and Share" session allowed parents to witness their children's achievements. Phonics lessons progressed to Phase 4, focusing on multi-syllable words like "windmill" and "sandpit," with pupils practicing sentence construction using newly acquired vocabulary. In Mathematics, children mastered addition and subtraction through hands-on activities, explored number bonds to 5 and 10 using ten frames, and concluded by creating various patterns.
This half-term, Year 1 pupils demonstrated exceptional dedication across the curriculum. In English, inspired by "Look Up!" and "Fletcher and the Falling Leaves," they crafted imaginative letters and informative texts, mastering descriptive adjectives and punctuation. In mathematics, the children explored height, length, and capacity, using rulers and practical activities. Their scientific investigations into seasonal changes and precipitation, alongside the design and technology taxi projects, showcased their problem-solving abilities. In music, they explored rhythm, melody, and musical notes. Finally, PSHE lessons fostered thoughtful discussions on financial responsibility and environmental care. We were particularly impressed with their creativity during World Book Day and International Women’s Day.
Year 2 completed a full and varied Spring 2 half term, engaging in a wealth of cross-curricular activities. In English, pupils explored ‘Greta and the Giants’, writing informative texts and creative stories, and then crafted seaside poems. Mathematics lessons focused on practical measurement skills, including length, mass, and capacity. In Science, children investigated material properties and plant survival, conducting experiments and observing seasonal changes. Year 2 presented their ‘Express and Share’ assembly, demonstrating their learning to parents. A collaborative art lesson followed, involving both children and parents in flower-themed creations. Finally, pupils undertook a fieldwork trip to Manor Park, practicing tallying and data collection. The children exhibited commendable effort and enthusiasm throughout the half term.
Year 3 pupils explored the 'Rocks, Relics, and Rumbles' topic, focusing on tsunamis and earthquakes, and located impacted areas using cardinal compass points. In Mathematics, children developed their understanding of mass and capacity, converting between grams, kilograms, milli litres, and litres. Art lessons saw the children create stunning Lowry-inspired landscapes, using various artistic techniques. In Design Technology, pupils designed and built automata toys, and in Science, they investigated magnets and magnetic forces. In English, children wrote informative newspaper articles and creative adventure narratives, employing descriptive language and direct speech. The children demonstrated ingenuity, creativity, and a strong understanding of the curriculum across all subjects.
Year 4 pupils experienced a particularly vibrant few weeks. In Literacy, they explored the narrative of ‘Everest’, composing engaging journey entries and suspenseful stories. Mathematical understanding deepened as children tackled complex fraction problems. A creative Art workshop led by LEO Art Director, Miss McClean introduced the designs of William Morris, resulting in impressive block printed pieces. Physical skills were honed during a dynamic Basketball session. The ‘Musical Extravaganza’ showcased the children's dedication and talent, culminating in a spectacular performance. Forest School provided opportunities for outdoor learning, including marshmallow roasting and bushcraft activities. The term proved exceptionally busy, and we celebrated the children's many accomplishments.
Year 5 engaged in a diverse and enriching spring term. The 'Sow, Grow, and Farm' topic deepened children's understanding of food origins and the importance of agriculture. In English, pupils transitioned from poetry composition to crafting informative leaflets and engaging in debates, enhancing their communication skills. Mathematics focused on practical statistics, area, and perimeter applications. Science explored the human life cycle, providing comprehensive biological knowledge. Children demonstrated their physical prowess through swimming achievements and an intraclass rounders tournament. A cultural visit to the Royal Festival Hall for 'Orchestra Unwrapped' exposed pupils to orchestral music. Furthermore, a conflict resolution workshop, led by NHS professionals, equipped children with valuable life skills.
Year 6 pupils demonstrated exceptional skill development across various subjects this term. In English, they crafted persuasive letters to the Prime Minister regarding global warming's impact on Antarctica, employing rhetorical questions and statistical evidence. A debate on Arctic animal captivity followed, where children presented balanced arguments informed by thorough research. The children also undertook a detailed study of Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition, examining his leadership and the expedition's challenges. They explored the "Heroic Age" of Antarctic exploration, appreciating human resilience. Furthermore, inspired by environmental artists, the pupils created artworks from recycled materials, conveying messages about global issues. These projects facilitated both artistic expression and environmental advocacy.
