A Word From Ms Williamson
Another half-term at Manor Park has come to a close, and it has been genuinely rewarding to see the engaging learning and activities our students have experienced, both in and out of the classroom. The past few weeks have been filled with active participation, creativity, and a strong sense of our school community.
Our adventurous Year 3 pupils embarked on an inspiring trip to Painshill, sparking their curiosity about nature and the beauty of our local landscape. Meanwhile, Year 2 had the wonderful opportunity to get up close and personal with the incredible creatures at the British Wildlife Centre, bringing their learning about the natural world to life.
History took on a vivid dimension for Year 5 during their Greek Day, with togas and ancient stories creating memorable learning. Year 1's step back to Victorian times also offered a valuable glimpse into the past. Even our youngest in Reception had an engaging introduction to the animal kingdom through the Safari Workshop right in their classroom.
The dedication and hard work of our Year 6 pupils were truly evident as they completed their SATs examinations. We were so proud of their resilience and positive attitude, further supported by a very successful SATs Breakfast Club, which provided a calm and encouraging start to their mornings.
We also came together as a school community for a heartwarming Pyjama Day in aid of the Little Lives charity, demonstrating our pupils' caring nature and commitment to supporting others. Our Year 6 pupils were also fortunate to experience the magic of theatre with a visit to see the spectacular performance of The Lion King – an unforgettable cultural experience (and one of my personal favourites!)
The creative talents of our Year 1 pupils were on full display during their delightful Song and Dance Performance, filling the school with music and movement. Alongside their academic pursuits, many of our pupils have been actively involved in numerous sports events, showcasing their teamwork, determination, and sporting prowess. Our Year 2 and Year 3 pupils have also been making great strides in their swimming lessons, developing essential life skills.
Looking ahead, I'm anticipating a good start to the next half-term with Sports Days and the Year 6 visit to the Brooklands Museum.
On a bittersweet note, we bid a fond farewell to Mrs Shapley, who retired on Wednesday 21st May after an incredible 15 years of dedicated service to our school. We extend our deepest gratitude to her for her unwavering commitment and wish her a very happy and fulfilling retirement.
Finally, I want to express my sincere appreciation to our wonderful staff for their tireless efforts in providing such enriching and diverse opportunities for our children. Thank you also to our supportive parents and carers for your continued partnership.
I look forward to welcoming the children back on Monday, June 2nd, ready for the next half-term of learning and growth. Wishing you all a restful break.
Throughout the current half term, the nursery children have engaged in an extensive exploration of Shadows and Reflections. Outdoor activities included observing how their bodies created shadows in sunlight, demonstrating the principle that shadows form when light is obstructed. The children noted the dynamic changes in shadow shape and size. Indoors, a teacher-led shadow puppet show inspired the creation of individual puppets and collaborative storytelling.
Furthermore, the curriculum introduced the foundational concepts of plant growth. Children planted sunflower seeds, diligently tending to them daily while learning the nomenclature of plant components such as the stem, roots, and petals. Inspired by "Errol's Garden," the nursery's growing area was revitalised, involving weeding and an exploration of herbs, with mint being a particular favourite due to its aromatic qualities.
In Mathematics, the concept of weighing was introduced using terms like "heavy" and "light." Children compared classroom objects using balancing scales, understanding that "balanced" signifies equilibrium. The nursery also reinforced numerical literacy through the song "Five Green Speckled Frogs," which facilitated counting backward from five and understanding the concept of "one less."
Phonics sessions focused on the weekly introduction of new sounds, encouraging children to identify these sounds in words and locate corresponding objects during play.
A significant emphasis this half term has been placed on fostering social-emotional development, specifically promoting kindness and active listening. Children practised turn-taking, sharing, and using polite language. This focus has visibly contributed to the children's increased confidence and their ability to collaborate harmoniously.
This half term, students embarked on an educational exploration of creepy crawlies and amazing animals through the "Animal Safari - Creep, Crawl and Wriggle" topic. The journey commenced with pupils adopting the role of minibeast detectives, delving into fascinating facts about these creatures and categorising them to understand their unique features. This foundational knowledge was then applied at Forest School, where they actively searched for minibeasts within their natural habitat, transforming theoretical understanding into practical experience.
A memorable highlight was the Reptile Workshop, where pupils encountered a diverse array of scaly creatures, including a snake, a tarantula, a tortoise, and a bearded dragon. This hands-on experience provided an unforgettable opportunity for close observation and interaction.
In English lessons, pupils utilised their acquired minibeast knowledge to compose factual sentences, reinforcing the importance of capital letters, finger spaces, and full stops. The lifecycle of caterpillars transforming into butterflies was observed with keen interest. The story "Mixed Up Chameleon" inspired creative writing, leading to the development of unique "mixed up animals," while the study of safari animals introduced the use of adjectives in sentence construction.
Mathematics lessons focused on counting forwards and backwards from 20. Engaging activities such as playing snakes and ladders and drawing hopscotches facilitated learning. Reception pupils also developed proficiency in recalling double facts and understanding halving through equal sharing, utilising their knowledge of double facts for verification.
Physical Education sessions have been dedicated to preparing for Sports Day, with them actively participating in balancing exercises, dribbling drills, and running races. Significant progress has also been made in the speed and efficiency of changing for PE lessons.
What a busy and exciting half term it's been for Year 1! Our 'School Days' driver topic has really brought history to life, especially during our fantastic engage week where the children looked wonderful dressed as Victorian pupils and experienced a traditional lesson. They have had lots of interesting discussions comparing school life then and now. In English, the children put their imaginations to work, writing super diary entries about their Victorian day using brilliant past tense '-ed' words and descriptive adjectives. They also dreamed big and penned wonderful setting descriptions of their ideal schools, packed with amazing adjectives and connected ideas.
Maths has seen us become confident counting in '2s, 5s, and 10s', and we've been exploring halves and quarters. Our inner artists were inspired by James Rizzi's street view artwork, leading to some fantastic drawings and layered cardboard creations. Forest School was also a highlight, offering wonderful opportunities for learning through play. RE lessons covered Judaism, including synagogues and Moses' stories. PSHE focused on germs and the importance of kindness and respect.
Finally, Year 1 put on a fantastic Song and Dance Performance, showcasing all their hard work and learning from this half term, not to mention their talent! They sparkled on stage, and we are so incredibly proud of their fantastic song and dance performance throughout!
It has been a wonderful half term filled with significant learning experiences and memorable moments for Year 2!
In English, pupils engaged with various writing forms. Inspired by 'Katie in London,' they composed imaginative diary entries detailing hypothetical days in the capital. Furthermore, Year 2 developed their persuasive writing skills by drafting formal letters to His Majesty King Charles III, articulating their perspectives on environmental and animal protection.
Mathematics focused on establishing a foundational understanding of fractions and equal parts. Pupils also enhanced their ability to tell time, mastering the skill of reading analogue clocks.
The captivating History topic, 'Magnificent Monarchs,' saw pupils journey through British history, exploring the reigns and varying powers of figures such as William the Conqueror, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and Queen Victoria. Pupils further developed their historical analysis skills by comparing two monarchs in written reports. Additionally, as part of VE Day commemorations, Year 2 thoughtfully designed their own commemorative medals.
In Science, the 'Animal Survival' unit provided an engaging exploration of habitats and micro-habitats, adaptations, food chains, and the impact of human activity on the environment. The curriculum also included a focus on life cycles, with pupils eagerly anticipating the metamorphosis of their class caterpillars into butterflies.
A notable highlight of the half term was the trip to the British Wildlife Centre, offering pupils the opportunity to observe animals in naturalistic enclosures, thereby reinforcing classroom learning.
Beyond core subjects, Quartz class benefited from weekly swimming sessions, developing water confidence and skills. Coral and Diamond classes are scheduled for their sessions in the Summer 2 half term. The school also hosted an enriching visit from a paramedic, who discussed their crucial community role and answered pupils' insightful questions.
The school is immensely proud of the hard work and progress demonstrated by Year 2 pupils throughout this half term, which has been filled with significant learning experiences and memorable moments.
The Year 3 pupils have concluded a highly productive and engaging first half of the term. An enriching educational visit to Painshill Park effectively complemented the history curriculum, offering pupils an interactive experience with Roman-themed activities. This excursion also provided valuable opportunities for observing the natural environment, including the recent offspring of various animal species during a walk around the lake.
Within the mathematics curriculum, the focus on financial literacy culminated in a practical, experiential learning activity where pupils engaged in simulated transactions, reinforcing their understanding of monetary values and the calculation of change. The science curriculum explored the biological sciences, specifically plant reproduction and dispersal strategies. Pupils further developed their scientific illustration skills through the creation of detailed and accurately labelled cross-sectional diagrams of flowering plants.
The introduction to the study of Roman history has provided a foundational understanding of the Roman Conquest, military organisation, and diverse forms of governance. Furthermore, pupils have actively engaged in developing their critical thinking and oracy skills through structured debates, considering varied interpretations of historical figures such as Boudicca. The progress and engagement demonstrated by Year 3 across all areas of the curriculum this half-term are commendable.
The Year 4 pupils have concluded a truly captivating and industrious half term, marked by significant discoveries across a wide array of subjects.
In Design and Technology, the pupils engaged in hands-on exploration of simple machines. They investigated how fundamental components such as wheels, axles, inclined planes, pulleys, and levers were not merely theoretical constructs but pivotal innovations that enabled ancient civilisations to transport exceptionally heavy loads. This demonstrated a remarkable engineering acumen, particularly in the absence of modern technological advancements.
Science lessons illuminated the intricate principles of electricity. Pupils not only acquired knowledge regarding electrical appliances and safety protocols but also constructed simple series circuits. This practical application allowed them to identify individual components and comprehend their essential functions. Furthermore, they adopted the role of junior scientists, conducting investigations into electrical conductors and insulators and identifying their common characteristics.
Beyond the scientific realm, the budding poets amongst the pupils embraced the concise elegance of Haiku, meticulously crafting their own expressive and poignant verses. Art and Design provided a valuable creative outlet as pupils explored three-dimensional representations of the human form, ranging from monumental statues to delicate figurines. Their studies encompassed historical examples from ancient civilisations, which subsequently inspired them to create their unique Sumer-style figurines.
Finally, the journey through History transported the pupils to the foundational civilisations of Ancient Sumer and Ancient Egypt. Comparisons were drawn between the intriguing hierarchies of their respective societies, and the life-sustaining importance of water sources and agricultural practices was thoroughly examined. Pupils gained insight into the daily lives of the populace, including the significant and often divine roles attributed to their kings and Pharaohs. It has indeed been a term of diverse learning and profound discovery for the Year 4 pupils.
Throughout the Summer 1 half term, Year 5 pupils demonstrated exceptional engagement with the 'Groundbreaking Greeks' driver project. This immersive curriculum brought their learning to life through a variety of exciting and educational experiences.
A particular highlight was the special Greek Day, where pupils impeccably brought history to life. Dressed as ancient Greeks, and an array of Greek gods and goddesses, they truly embodied the spirit of the era. The day included the tasting of authentic Greek cuisine, which was met with great enthusiasm, alongside spirited participation in a Greek-themed intraclass tournament. Events such as javelin throwing and shot-put allowed pupils to physically engage with ancient athletic traditions. This historical inquiry fostered a profound understanding of ancient Greek civilisation, enabling pupils to explore its significant achievements and lasting impact on the modern world.
In Science, the curriculum seamlessly linked to the 'Groundbreaking Greeks' project through an investigation into the properties of materials. Pupils conducted practical experiments using scientific equipment to explore concepts related to insulation and conduction, specifically evaluating which properties were the most effective insulators or conductors.
In Art, pupils delved into the realm of 'Mixed Media'. They were encouraged to creatively combine various materials and techniques, drawing inspiration from ancient Greek art while also incorporating their own unique interpretations. This culminated in the creation of distinctive final artistic pieces.
English lessons provided an opportunity for pupils to channel their inner storytellers. They retold classic myths and legends from Greek mythology, adopting the perspective of a character within a diary format. The focus was on crafting engaging narratives featuring compelling characters and exciting plot twists, drawing upon the rich tapestry of stories they had encountered throughout the project.
This half term, the Year 6 cohort successfully completed their Standard Assessment Tests (SATS). The pupils demonstrated commendable diligence and effort throughout this demanding period. To support them, a Breakfast Club was provided, offering a relaxed environment for pupils to socialise and enjoy a nutritious breakfast before undertaking their assessments.
In their historical studies, pupils engaged in a comprehensive examination of 'Britain at War'. This inquiry involved a detailed exploration of the antecedent factors that culminated in the commencement of the First World War, fostering a profound comprehension of this significant historical period.
The Science curriculum focused on the intricacies of human visual perception. Pupils developed their scientific lexicon pertaining to the properties of light, investigating how the human eye processes light through the use of torches and understanding that light travels in a straight line.
Complementing these studies, the Art curriculum explored 'Distortion and Abstraction'. Pupils investigated artistic methodologies that employ the manipulation of line and colour to generate abstract compositions, subsequently culminating in the creation of their own unique artistic interpretations.
In English, pupils developed their narrative writing skills by crafting their own mystery stories, inspired by the text 'Letters From the Lighthouse'. They meticulously considered various literary techniques to aid suspense in their writing and effectively convey character through actions and dialogue.
