Update - Current World Events in Ukraine

Ukraine is facing an urgent humanitarian crisis and as a result, I am sure you and your children are all saddened by the current events and may have questions or concerns. Many parents have enquired how they can help. Currently, there are several charities working tirelessly on the ground to offer support to the millions of people affected. We understand that it can be hard to know how to help so we have found some charity campaigns and fundraisers to donate to: Click Here

As always, teachers are supporting children within school with any questions or worries in a sensitive manner. Furthermore, we have a family support worker who is here, should you need any support or are directly affected and want to talk. Please contact the school if you need to arrange a meeting or a telephone call with the family support worker.

Here are some resources you may find useful:

  1. Supporting your child if they see upsetting content online about what is happening in Ukraine (Childnet): Childnet

  2. We should not hide from children what is happening in Ukraine (Schools Week/Children's Commissioner): Schools Week

  3. How to talk to children about what’s happening in Ukraine and World War Three anxiety (Metro): The Metro

  4. Help for teachers and families to talk to pupils about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and how to help them avoid misinformation (Department for Education): DfE

LEO Trustee Visit to Cheam Common Junior Academy

Last Friday, the LEO Trustees visited all the schools within the Trust talking to children, observing the learning within the classrooms and looking at the classroom environments. The Trustees are responsible for the general control and management of the administration of the Trust. During their visit, the Trustees enjoyed their tour of our school and speaking to the children to discuss 'Reading for Pleasure', 'World Book Day' and our Digital practice within the classrooms, which they were particularly impressed, especially the use of technology across KS2. Their highlight of the tour was looking at and discussing the children's fantastic costumes worn during World Book Day. Well done all involved.

Positive Playtime - A Positive Approach to Play Times

We have had a fantastic first week of Positive Playtimes. The children have been showing off their skipping and curling skills as well as enjoying reading and colouring in the quiet area. The craze of next week is, Tennis and the game of next week is, ‘Seaweed’ (a fun, friendly version of 'Stuck in the Mud').

Check out some of the fun had during playtime through the photos below!

The success of Positive Playtimes is due to the wonderful team of lunchtime adults. Each week, we will introduce one of our adults so you can get to know them.

Meet Mrs Davis - HLTA Cover Supervisor

Mrs Davis' favourite subject at school was English.

Her favourite playtime game was French skipping.

Mrs Davis' favourite thing about CCJ is that everyone is so kind and the atmosphere is lovely.

She is most excited about the new equipment for play times.

Usborne Books & World Book Day 'Book Sale' Total!

Last week, Cheam Common Junior joined forces with Usborne Books to raise money for our School and Class libraries through a sponsored read and a 'Book/Cake' sale. Due to the overwhelming support from both children and parents alike, we are pleased to announce that we raised an incredible £1,000. This is almost double what we raised during our last sale in 2020! The money raised will go towards purchasing new books for children to enjoy when they return in the Summer term.

A huge thank you to everybody who helped and contributed and we look forward to future sales to continue helping restock our libraries!

Amazon Wishlist to support our School & Class Libraries

As our ongoing pledge to increase books within our school and class libraries, we have put together an Amazon Wish List should you wish to help us in purchasing any books for these areas. If you would like to support us with providing all our children with every opportunity to read, Click Here. Please note you need to access the wish list using a PC or laptop so you can select the year group.
