Welcome to our weekly newsletter!

Welcome Back Cheam Common Junior Academy!

We are very excited to welcome everyone back especially our new Year 3s. We hope you all had a good summer break and are ready to to start the school year. We have lots of exciting things planned and we look forward to sharing them with you soon.

During the summer holidays, Cheam Common have been busy readying the school by having new building work completed. We are pleased to inform you we have a new nurture provision which includes another sensory space. We look forward to using our new space.

Congratulations Miss Gunner!

Over the holidays, Miss Gunner and her partner were both pleased and excited to welcome their beautiful little boy, Ellis Adam Peck into the world! Both mother, father and baby are doing brilliantly and we would like to extend our congratulations to them all during this wonderfully joyous occasion.

Although not with us at the start of the term, Miss Gunner is excited to be spending time with her beautiful bundle of joy and cannot wait to pop back in very soon to see you all and wish you the best of luck!

A Week in Pictures at Cheam Common Junior!

Across the school, children have been enjoying being back both inside and outside the classroom. There has been a hive of exciting energy coming from each of the rooms where children have been taking part in a wide range of fun, exciting and practical based learning lessons, as well as develop their writing, mathematics, reading and digital skills. Check out just a small snapshot of the learning from this week!

Curriculum Updates

This week, children have been excited to start their new learning topics. We have also completed some assessments to check what learning has 'stuck' and what we need to focus on.

Wider Opportunities and Club Lists

As many of you may be aware, we are pleased to announce that from next week (Monday 13th September), our wide range of sporting and wider opportunity clubs and activities for children start. From football, netball and archery to art, Mandarin and gymnastics, there are over 40 activities for children to take part in.

Interest for clubs has been incredibly high and although we are pleased that so many children were able to secure a place, we understand the disappointment that some may have faced not securing a place. We hope to offer more exciting and new clubs in the future and will continue to provide further information as and when announced.

English Power of Reading Books

Throughout the week, children have loved listening and reading their brand new class reading books! Each book has been carefully selected to help children within their writing, providing wonderful ideas, grammatical features and exciting new vocabulary!

Why not check out a list of great recommended reading books for your child to read through out Battle of the Books reading list!

Cheam Common Junior Library

During the summer, our school library has been restocked and refilled with a whole range of exciting new books for children across the school to borrow and enjoy. We are very excited to launch and open the library to children next week during lunch times! Why not have a look at some of the titles below and see if you can spot any books that you would like to read!

Weekly News Updates

Individual School Photographs!

On Friday 17th September, children are to have their Individual School Photographs taken along with any siblings (both Infants and Juniors). Please ensure your child is in full school uniform.

If your child has a sibling in the Infants, and you would like for them to be photographed together, please bring them promptly to the Junior school hall at 08:00am. The company will try to accommodate as many families as they can in the allotted time slot between 08:00am - 08:30am.

Should you have any questions, please speak to a member of the office team.

Jeans for Genes Day!

Next week, children can come to school on Thursday 16th September wearing their favourite pair of jeans as part of 'Jeans for Genes' day in order to help raise awareness and money to help vulnerable children in the UK affected by a genetic disorder. Children can make a donation of £1 , which will be given to charity. Members of SLT will be on the gate to collect any donations in the morning.

On Thursday, children can come to school wearing their jeans along with their usual school attire of a white shirt, tie, jumper and sensible black shoes or plimsolls.

Swimming at Cheam Common Junior

This year, we are very excited for children to take part in swimming lessons at Cheam Leisure Centre. Each term, children from one year group will take part in a series of weekly sessions. This term, Year 4 will be attending swimming lessons every Monday morning.

Please ensure your child brings to school a swimming costume (swimming shorts or trunks no longer than the knee for boys and a one piece costume for girls), a towel, swimming hat and googles.

If you have any questions regarding swimming, please speak to your child's class teacher.

School Dinners and Packed Lunches

At Cheam Common Juniors we want all of our children to become ‘healthy learners’ and we recognise how important that the food that our children eat is to this. Our school meals are designed to be appealing, varied and balanced, meeting Government guidelines for nutritional standards in schools. School dinners cost £2.35. Click here to check out the Autumn School Dinner menu and speak to our school office should you wish for your child to have a school meal.

At Cheam Common Junior, we realise some children prefer to have a packed lunch from home. We ask that the lunches provided are healthy, balanced and appropriately sized. Please visit the NHS ‘change for life’ website on the link below for guidance on packing a healthy lunch box: Healthier lunch boxes

Children can also bring in a healthy snack for break time.

Birthdays & Celebrations!

When your child celebrates their birthday, we would ask that the child donates a book to the library instead of bringing treats for the class. The book will help us to grow our library and ensure we are promoting healthy eaters. Alternatively, should you wish to provide your child's class with a treat or snack, we kindly ask that it is something small and healthy. If you are unsure, always consult your child's class teacher.

Parking on Kingsmead Avenue

Please remember to be respectful of our neighbours by driving and parking responsibly in the surrounding roads.

If you want to report illegal parking in the roads around school, please contact Saba (Sutton Council's parking enforcement contractor) on 0208 661 0096.
