School Updates
Make Me Prime Minister!
On Tuesday 27th September, you may have spotted a few familiar faces on the Channel 4 documentary, Make Me Prime Minister! In June, we welcomed participants of the show to our school, where contestants interviewed children about their proposed new educational policy, and undertook tech-themed lessons with the children. We are incredibly proud of all of the children who were involved with the filming and it was wonderful to hear some fantastic feedback about our school from the contestants. See some photos from the day below.
Come and meet our new Family Support Worker
Please come and join us on Friday 7th October between 9am-10am to meet our new allocated Family Support Worker, Alice Whyman. She will be able to answer any questions and will also be providing some resource packs and signposting to helpful services if needed. This will be a very relaxed and informal meeting. Please feel free to drop-in and say hello and stay for as little or as long as you like.
Alice has introduced herself below and would love to meet you on Friday!
My name is Alice and I am the new Family Support Worker for Cheam Common Infants and Junior school. I am excited about my new role and want to make you aware that there is support available to all parents and carers.
Parenting can be tough, and even more so with a lot of the challenges that we have all faced over the last few years. I am here to offer guidance and support and can signpost/refer to local and national services. If you need any support please do get in touch with me at school, or speak to a member of SLT.
I am at Cheam Common Infant school on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the Junior School on Wednesdays and Thursdays each week.
I look forward to meeting you all!

Cycle to School Week!
We'd love to see any photos of you cycling to school. Simply send them to the school office or tag @CCJacademy on Twitter.
The Junior Travel Ambassadors and Eco Council are taking part in campaigning for the annual event next week (3rd - 7th October). This year, the Bikeability Trust are taking the handlebars, supported by friends at Sustrans. The event fits perfectly with the focus on cycling and we can’t wait to help celebrate!
Cycle to School Week will run from Monday 3rd to Friday 7th October across the UK. During this time, we want as many people as possible to make a pledge for Cycle to School Week. In total, the journeys to school pledged during Bike to School Week in 2021 saved over £20,000 of fuel. How much can Cheam Common Junior Academy help to save this year?
As part of the campaign, Junior Travel Ambassadors and Eco Council will be promoting and raising awareness of cycling to school and encouraging all children to take part! So, dust off your helmet and hold onto those handlebars!
Year 6 Bikeability
Year 6 children have the opportunity to take part in our Bikeability sessions in November. These sessions focus on ensuring your child knows how cycle safely, with particular lessons on how to navigate roads and traffic in a safe manner. Your child must have, and be able to bring, a bike to school for every day of their three day course. For extra information, and to sign your Year 6 child up, please read this letter. There are only 16 spots remaining!
Secondhand books and board games
Do you have any secondhand books or board games that you no longer need? At Cheam Common, we would appreciate donations of any of these items. Books are always appreciated and board games are extremely useful, especially during wet play! Simply drop these into the office or ask your child to hand them to their class teacher. Thank you for your support in advance!

Weekly School and Sporting News Stories
Our School Council visits the Houses of Parliament
On Thursday, members of our School Council from Years 4-6 travelled to Westminster on a trip to the Houses of Parliament. There, they were given a tour around the building, in which they were allowed to sit in the Houses of Lords and Commons, as well as Westminster Hall, where Queen Elizabeth II lay in state recently. Afterwards, they took part in a People's Parliament workshop, where they learned about equality, fairness and some history behind the right to vote in the United Kingdom. The children were exemplary role models to our school; their fantastic were commented on by several members of the public. Well done, everyone!
Year 4's FizzPop Workshop
This week, Year 4 were lucky enough to take part in Gooey Stuey's FizzPop Science workshop, where they got hands-on whilst learning about our digestive systems, as well as how healthy eating can benefit our bodies.

Supporting Sutton Initiatives
Reducing the use of physical chastisement in Sutton
There are many different views about physical chastisement, but it is widely accepted there are much more effective ways to teach children right from wrong.
As a local authority, Sutton has seen a number of children coming to the attention of police and social care due to the use of physical chastisement and as such has worked with other local authorities on an initiative to reduce this number.
In line with this initiative, we agree that anything that causes harm to a child is unacceptable.
As a school we have a duty to report incidents of suspected or confirmed physical chastisement to social care and the police which leaves visible bruising, grazes, scratches, minor swelling, cuts as well as stress injuries from prolonged standing, position holding as these are banned by law in the United Kingdom.
If you would like support on how to manage your child’s behaviour at home, please do not hesitate to contact us.

‘Small Change, Big Difference’ Parent Group for parents of children with a diagnosis of autism.'
We are also looking to host another Small Change, Big Difference course with Adapt to Learn. For those that are unfamiliar with this course, we run this as an alternative to the Early Bird programme. Some information about this is below.
If you are interested in attending this course, please email: sutton@nas.org.uk and we'll be in touch.
The aim is to empower parents, supporting them to help their children by developing an in-depth understanding of autism. Taking a positive approach, we will explore, share and discuss practical strategies to help develop communication skills, pre-empt and manage behaviour and gain confidence and resilience.
During the sessions, parents will be given the opportunity to make connections, gain support and feel less isolated.
Each course comprises of four x 1.5-hour sessions and will cover a range of topics.
