Cheam Common Junior - School Updates

Preparation for the Queen's Jubilee Celebrations at Cheam Common Junior!

As the build up to next week's celebrations begin to build surrounding the Queen's Jubilee, Cheam Common Junior is buzzing with excitement preparing for the week long events. With each class preparing their own performances of well-known British songs to perform to the school, making their own colourful bunting and decorations, to creating their own fantastic pieces of artwork, we cannot wait to celebrate such an iconic event. Don't forget, next Wednesday is the Cheam Common Infants & Juniors School Street Party, where children can come to school in Mufti wearing red, white and blue colours! Look out for photographs of all the events in next week's newsletter!

Graduation at King's College, London for The Brilliant Club!

Children from across Year 5 and Year 6 have been taking part in an exciting opportunity this term thanks to the Scholars Programme. Working with The Brilliant Club, children have explored the concept of university, the fascinating topics beyond the curriculum and opportunities that it could provide. After completing their very own dissertation, children were fortunate to visit Kings College, London where they took part in their very own graduation ceremony. Congratulations to all our graduates!

Women's FA Final at Wembley!

On Sunday, lucky children and their families were fortunate enough to watch the Woman's FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. Thanks to Miss Kelly and Mr Ewing for acquiring a series of free tickets, children were able to experience the football finals between Chelsea and Manchester City. Taking to the stands, children had a fantastic time watching the game unfold before Chelsea claimed victory with 3 goals to 2. Well done to all those that went and thank you to the adults for accompanying children on the day!

Year 6 Boys Football in the U11 Surrey Cup Finale!

A huge congratulations to our Year 6 Boys Football Squad, who have played brilliantly this season. After a series of impressive victories, our Year 6 Boys secured a place in the U11 Surrey Cup Final, where they played Whitgift Primary School.


Throughout the match, the boys played incredibly, demonstrating such skill, perseverance and encouragement both on and off the pitch. Although they performed fantastically, Cheam Common lost with a 5-2 win for Whitgift.


We are incredibly proud of our team for making the finals and thank Mr Ewing for a tremendous performance this term. Well done all1

Sutton Borough Swimming Gala 2022!

Last Friday evening, members of the Cheam Common Junior Swimming Squad took part in the annual Sutton Borough Swimming Gala 2022, held at Westcroft.


Throughout the evening, the squad swam brilliantly having a fantastic time in each of the rounds. Amazing, our wonderful swimmers came 1st place in 10 of their races.


Due to their fantastic efforts and total medals acquired, Cheam Common Swimming Squad finished overall in 3rd place, achieving Bronze. Congratulations to all who took part and thank you to Mr Ewing and Miss Hendra for accompanying the children on the night.

Year 6 Girls Netball Update

Congratulations to our amazing Year 6 Girls Netball team for their impressive victory against Nonsuch.


Two matches were played by both out A-Team and B-Team, with all girls displaying such impressive talent, determination and ferocity on the court. Congratulations to the Girls A-Team for their 12-0 win and also to the Girls B-Team for their 5-1 win.


Thank you to Mrs Culver and to Miss Austin for helping organise events.

Sutton Borough Girls Cricket Competition

Well done to our Year 5 and Year 6 Girls Cricket team who have qualified for the London Youth Games Finals after their impressive performance earlier this week. Throughout the afternoon, children played a series of matches, securing victory after victory.


Due to winning their matches, our Girls Cricket Team will now continue onto the next stage, qualifying for the Surrey Finals later this term.


Thank you to Sutton Sports Partnership for organising and for Mr Ewing for his continued hard work in organising another great event!

Surrey Cricket Foundation Activity Day

Our amazing Year 5 girls were excited to represent Cheam Common Junior this years Girls Cricket Festival at East Molesey Cricket Club. After an early start to the day, children participated in a range of cricket matches as well as enjoying a well-deserved ice-cream and ice lolly in the sun! Throughout the day, children enjoyed participating in matches against competing school. Fun was had by all! Thanks to Mrs Madia for accompanying and for Mr Ewing for organising a brilliant day out.

Year 3 & Year 4 Sutton Borough Tennis Tournament

Year 3 & Year 4 children had a fantastic time competing in the Sutton Borough Tennis tournament organised by SSP Sports. Throughout the day, children competed in a series of tennis matches where they showed such focus and determination. After a nail biting final match against Westbourne Primary, our Cheam Common tennis team proved victorious to claim 1st place. As a result, the Year 3 & Year 4 tennis team will now complete in the London Youth Games Finals in June. Congratulations to all those who took part and for Mr Ewing for organising.

Positive Playtime at Cheam Common Junior

We have had a great week, where children have been developing their tennis skills alongside playing 'Sharky Sharky' - a fun, safe way of playing tag!


Next week’s 'Craze of the Week' is Scoop Bat & Balls and the 'Game of the Week' is ‘Grandma's Footsteps’.


Our sports leaders will be on hand to help run games and crazes as well as model skills of turn taking, being respectful to adults, each other and the equipment, helping all children have a happy play time.

Parent / Carer Open Afternoon at Cheam Common Junior

This half term, we are very excited to welcome back parent / carer visitors to the school after recent closures over the past two years.


On Tuesday 24th May from 2pm - 3pm, we would like to welcome the parents of Year 4 & 6 to come and meet members of the Senior Leadership Team, take a tour of the school courtesy of our Head Boy and Girl before visiting your child's class where they will show case their learning from the past academic year.

Friends of Cheam Common - Updates

Queen's Jubilee Mufti Day at Cheam Common Junior

To celebrate the Queen's upcoming Jubilee, we will be holding a special tea party on the afternoon of Wednesday 25th May and children can come to school in Mufti. Children can come to school wearing the colours of either red, white and blue or a combination of all three as part of the celebrations.


Supported by the Friends of Cheam Common, we are that a small donation be contributed which will go towards the Summer Fair 'Rainbow Raffle'.

Competitions and Activities

LEO Arts Photography Competition

As there is to be a brand new Arts Facility opening in the centre of Sutton. Throwley Yard, Sutton and LEO have joined up and would love to understand the culture and community within your local area, so that they can design a fantastic space for the community to use.


As part of this exciting opportunity, we are running a competition to photograph culture and community within your area that tells a story. Winning entries will travel to Sutton and must have their own device to take photographs on (iPad, phone, camera), where they will be taking photos of the local community, surveying the local people and their work displayed in the new cultural arts centre (Throwley Yard) in Sutton, opening in 2023.

This week as part of mental health week, we have been looking at identifying our emotions using some of the Beano characters as well as thinking about who we can talk to if we are feeling worried or lonely. We are also looking to host another Small Change, Big Difference course with Adapt to Learn. For those that are unfamiliar with this course, we run this as an alternative to the Early Bird programme. Some information about this is below.

‘Small Change, Big Difference’ Parent Group for parents of children with a diagnosis of autism.'

The aim is to empower parents, supporting them to help their children by developing an in-depth understanding of autism. Taking a positive approach, we will explore, share and discuss practical strategies to help develop communication skills, pre-empt and manage behaviour and gain confidence and resilience.


During the sessions, parents will be given the opportunity to make connections, gain support and feel less isolated.

Each course comprises of four x 1.5-hour sessions and will cover a range of topics.

Summer Lunch Menus at Cheam Common Junior

At Cheam Common Juniors we want all of our children to become ‘healthy learners’ and we recognise how important that the food that our children eat is to this. Our school meals are designed to be appealing, varied and balanced, meeting Government guidelines for nutritional standards in schools. School dinners cost £2.35.
